CURSORY THOUGHTS ON THE OPENING

OF THE NEW YEAR.

TIME, alas, how imperceptibly it steals away; another year is now fast approaching to its close, The year 1842 with its unknown joys and sorrows is close at hand. What awaits us we know not; but the sweet thought that all our times are in the hand of an all-wise and gracious God, should encourage us to rest amid the changing scenes of ever changing time,

in Him who resteth in his love.

My God, I would not long to see, My fate with curious eyes ;What gloomy scenes are laid for me, Or what bright joys may rise. Dear reader, what multitudes of our fellow creatures have passed through the chilling streams of Jordan into eternity, since the commencement of this closing year: some to sing with redeemed millions before the throne in glory, and others to reap the fruit of their doings in the abodes of darkness and despair. It is mercy alone that has spared you and me, dear reader. May we, therefore, as monuments of its most tender care, speak forth its wonders; and may it for ever be the theme of our song, the ground of our boasting, and the source of our joy. January, 1842.]

My God, I pray not for the great things of this world, but that thou wouldest create in me a clean heart,

and renew a right spirit within me, Oh for a heart sprinkled with the precious blood of Christ, set free from the galling yoke of sin, prepared by grace to be the blessed Redeemer's throne, and filled with love to God as a

Oh,

covenant-making and a covenantkeeping God, to Jesus my Elder Brother and redeeming Lord, and to the Holy Spirit as the sanctifier of my sin-polluted soul. O God! give me a new heart, that I may daily feel my helplessness, my entire dependence on thee, and on thy free grace, for my salvation, and every needed supply of grace to help me on my way. let me be filled with the fulness of God, and know experimentally what are the heights and depths and lengths and breadths of thy everlasting love; that being drawn by its attractive influence, I may run after thee, embrace thee, live upon thee, and enjoy thee as my portion for ever. To this end make my faith strong, my hopes lively, my evidences clear, and my prospects bright.

If thou shouldest graciously spare me to see another year, be pleased to water my poor thirsty soul with the
