Samuel Purdy, temporary Speaker, in the chair. Roll called. All members present. } On motion of Mr. Franklin, the House took a recess of ten minutes to enable Mr. Goldwater to assume his duties as temporary Chief Clerk. House called to order after recess, Mr. Goldwater acting as Chief Clerk pro tem. On motion of Mr. Armstrong, Mr. G. W. Ingalls was elected assistant Chief Clerk pro tem. Upon motion of Mr. Porter, the House proceeded to ballot for Permanent Speaker. Four ballots were taken with a like result, as follows: For Mr. Ruggles: Messrs. Armstrong, Brannen, Brown (J.A), Connell, Franklin, Hunter, Imus, Martin, Rollins, Wardwell, Watkins, Mr. Speaker-12. For Mr. Rollins: Messrs. Aram, Brown (G. W.), Frame, Houck, Nichols, Nash, Percy, Porter, Ruggles, Robbins, Sias -12. On motion, House adjourned until 2 P. M. AFTERNOON SESSION. House met at 2 P. M., persuant to adjournment. On motion, the House proceeded to ballot for Permanent Speaker. Vote stood as before-12 to 12. Mr. Rollins introduced the following resolution : Whereas, Section 4, paragraph 1113 of Chapter XIV., Compiled Laws of the Territory of Arizona, provides that neither House of the Legislature shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days; and whereas the dead-lock, so called, in both Houses, engendering a spirit of contention and hostility among the members unfavorable to wise legislation, and making it doubtful if much good can come to the Territory from a Legislature so inharmonious in its spirit and in its acts; therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the Thirteenth Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Arizona is hereby granted the consent of the Assembly or House to adjourn sine die. Mr. Speaker called on Mr. Franklin to take the chair while he discussed the resolution. Mr. Speaker in the chair again. On motion, the consideration of the Resolution was indefinitely postponed. On motion of Mr. Armstrong the House proceeded to ballot for Permanent Speaker with result as before. Mr. Ruggles receiving twelve votes and Mr. Rollins receiving twelve votes. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, House met pursuant to adjournment at 10 A. M. Mr. Purdy in the chair. Roll called. All members present. Minutes of preceding day read and approved. } Mr. Rollins arose and announced his withdrawal as a candidate for Speaker. He thanked those who had supported him, and in conclusion nominated Hon. De Forest Porter, of Maricopa, for Speaker. Nomination of Mr. Porter was seconded by Mr. Aram. On motion, House proceeded to ballot for Speaker with the following result: Porter-Aram, Brown (G. W.), Frame, Houck, Nash, Nichols, Percy, Rollins, Ruggles, Risley, Robbins, Sias-12. Ruggles-Armstrong, Brannen, Brown (J. A.), Connell Franklin, Hunter, Imus, Martin, Porter, Wardwell, Watkins, Mr. Speaker-12. Vote being a tie, on motion another ballot was taken. Result the same as before. On motion of Mr. Rollins another ballot was taken, with result as before. Mr. Porter receiving twelve votes and Mr. Ruggles receiving twelve votes. On motion of Mr. Watkins the House again proceeded to ballot for Permanent Speaker, with the same result. Messrs. Porter and Ruggles each receiving twelve votes.
