I am sorry, Sir, to be compelled to mention these things, which are so generally known in this place. But since you and your minister have done all in your power to destroy my character abroad, by your slanderous publication, is it not manifestly my duty to let strangers know something of the men on whose bare assertion such false accusations rest? This you must admit. I have there fore but one word more to utter. You have said, that if you have made any mistakes, you will cheerfully correct them. You cannot be so blind as not to discover the errors which I have detected. Are you enough of a Christian to redeem this public pledge?

Yours,

BERNARD WHITMAN.

Waltham, Jan. 1832.
