This was declined on the part of the publishers at Andover, as being unreasonable. It was not until the whole work was stereotyped by the N. York publishers, that they had any respect to Prof. C.'s claims or those of his former publishers. When they saw that a mere reprint of Prof. C.'s translation, (the additions of Roediger excepted), had been published in England and constituted the body of the Grammar; and were given to understand that the claims of the rightful publishers and translator would be insisted on, they had the "generosity" to yield, rather than lose their plates. As this is the fourth time, within a short period, that the strong arm of the law has been obliged to interpose, either to exact damages for their unlawful reprints, or to arrest the design to engage in them, it is to be hoped, that il faut de l'argent will not hereafter be quite so prominent in the dealings of these N. York publishers. I have done; and I am almost ashamed of having spent my time in writing so much, and of wearying the reader's patience in calling him to peruse what will be of very little interest to him. It is the first time I ever invited the public to peruse any defence of myself; I hope in all mercy to me and to them, it will be the last. But when the spirit of cupidity not only invades all rights, but adds contumely and vituperation to its darings, I may be permitted to say, that while I leave free to all the world any criticisms they may please to make on my writings, yet when my character and my honor are attacked, or called in question ou points that may seem to be doubtful because they are not fully explained, I may be permitted to state facts in my vindication, and to repel injurious criticism by the weapons which it has forced upon me in the execution of its designs. Such, it seems, is the reward which a man is to expect, who has spent his life in the service of sacred studies. When he is bowing down toward the tomb, he is to leave his family, it may be, in indigence, because the avails of his labors have been wrested from him by the cupidity of some booksellers, who disregard alike the laws of honor and the claims of long and severe labor.
