PRACTICE

Is a Rule generally used in business, as a compendious method of performing the Rule of Three, when the first term is unity.

It is performed by taking aliquot parts of the price, and dividing those parts into the given quantity.

1st. When the price is less than a penny.

Example. d. 1705 at 1 2. 12) 4261

Take aliquot parts of a penny,—divide

the quotient by 12, and by 20. This is the 2,0) 3,5.6

same as reducing farthings into pounds. £1.15.61

Aliquot means an exact part of a certain number—thus 1fd. is an aliquot part of a shilling (one-eighth); but 134 d. is not an aliquot part.

2d. When the price is less than a shilling.
