FRACTIONS, ARE EITHER VULGAR OR DECIMAL. m OF VULGAR FRACTIONS. A FRACTION is a quantity which represents a part or parts of an integer or whole. A Vulgar Fraction is represented by two numbers placed one above the other, with a line between them, as,,, &c. The number above the line is called the Numerator, and that below, the Denominator. The Denominator shews into how many parts an unit is divided; and the Numerator how many of those parts are represented by the fraction: thus, means, that an unit, as one shilling, one gallon, &c., is divided into nine parts, and five of those parts are to be taken. Of Vulgar Fractions there are six sorts. (1.) A SIMPLE Fraction has but one Numerator, and one Denominator, as 3, 1, 3, &c. 23 279 (2.) A COMPOUND Fraction is the fraction of a fraction, and is known by the word or placed between the parts; (3.) A PROPER Fraction is when the Numerator is less than 5 the Denominator, as 1,, 13, &c. (4.) An IMPROPER Fraction is when the Numerator is equal to, or greater than the Denominator, as 3, (5.) A MIXED Number is composed of a whole number (6) A COMPLEX Fraction has a fraction or mixed number, 3 8 2 in either or both of its terms; as 5 7' 9' 31' &c. |
