The NAVAL ARTIFICER'S MANUAL is a revised edition of the "Naval Artificer's Hand-Book, 1914," with much new matter added, including the rules for inspection of lumber, descriptions of various steering appliances including telemotors, water-ejecting system, acetylene welding, etc.
The "Naval Artificer's Hand-Book, 1914," was prepared at the request of the Bureau of Construction and Repair, to be used as a hand-book and text-book for Deck Artificers, in the extension of education for enlisted men, as set forth in Navy Department General Order, No. 63, dated December 16, 1913. While this order provided for supplying deficiencies in academic education to all enlisted men requiring it, it was considered advisable to include in this book, a chapter on the rudiments of arithmetic for convenience of reference, and because of the important relation this subject bears to the mechanical trades.
Robinson's Naval Construction was consulted in the preparation of definitions, formulæ pertaining to Naval Architecture, etc. A brochure on the "Proper Use of Tools," written by Mr. Wm. Deitz, formerly instructor in the Louisville, Ky., Industrial School, was, by kind permission of the author, freely consulted in preparing the article on Woodworking Hand Tools.
