Representative Government. 10. Military History and Strategy. B. Candidates proposing to offer any other Historical subject or select portion of Law must obtain the approval of the Board. Applications for such approval must be made to the Assistant Registrar not later than the Wednesday of the second week of the Michaelmas Full Term preceding the Examination, and must be accompanied by evidence of the fitness of the Candidate to offer such Historical subject or select portion of Law, and by six copies of a statement of the books, documents, and other authorities which, the Candidate proposes to use. THESIS. 1. Candidates are allowed to present a Thesis on some question within any Special Subject offered by them in the Examination. (a) A Candidate presenting a Thesis on a question covered by one of the prescribed Special Subjects may either (1) take the ordinary Special Subject papers or (2) take a special paper containing questions on the portion of history which covers his Special Subject and the authorities (whether those specified for the Special Subject or others) relevant to the question treated in his Thesis. In the latter case the Candidate shall notify the Board of his desire to take such a special paper, and shall submit for its approval a list of his authorities, stating at the same time the title of his Thesis. (6) A Candidate who desires to offer a Thesis on a question not covered by one of the prescribed Special Subjects must submit, for the approval of the Board, some alternative Historical subject or period covering the question treated in his Thesis, together with a statement of the books, documents, and other authorities which he proposes to use for that special subject or period (see p. 109, B), and evidence of his fitness to offer that special subject or period. Such a Candidate will be required to answer a paper containing questions on the portion of history included in his special subject or period, and on the authorities for that special subject or period submitted by him, and approved by the Board, particularly those relevant to the question treated in his Thesis. (c) A Candidate may offer as his Thesis any Essay, or part of an Essay, which he has already sent in or proposes to send in for any of the University Essay Prizes included in the Schedule given below, provided that such Essay deals with a subject covered by one of the prescribed Special Subjects, or with an alternative Historical subject or period which, together with a statement of the books, documents, and other authorities to be used by the Candidate, has been submitted to and approved by the Board (see p. 109, B). Such a Candidate must answer either the ordinary Special Subject papers (if his Thesis is covered by a prescribed Special Subject) or a special paper as prescribed in paragraphs (a) or (b) above. 2. Any Candidate who offers an extra Special Subject connected with the History of Literature or Art in addition to one of the ordinary Special Subjects, or in addition to a special subject approved by the Board, may offer a Thesis in one or the other, but not in both, 3. Every Candidate who presents a Thesis will be examined viva voce upon that Thesis. 4. Candidates must inform the Board through the Assistant Registrar of their intention to offer a Thesis and of the subject within which that Thesis falls, and, unless the Thesis falls within one of the prescribed Special Subjects and they elect to take the ordinary Special Subject papers, of the authorities which they propose to use, not later than |
