84. Square Inches

1. You have been using the inch, the foot, and the yard in measuring length. Today we wish to to measure surface or area. The most convenient measure for small areas is the square inch, or the 1-inch square.

2. Measure each side of this square. it? How wide is it?

How long is

A square whose sides are each 1 inch long is a square inch (sq. in.).

3. Draw a square inch on the blackboard.

4. Now measure the large square. It is 2inches on a side, or a 2-inch square. Cut a 1-inch square from paper and find how many times it is contained in the large square.

5. Cut a 2-inch square

85. Using the Square Inch

1. This is a rectangle. Find rectangles in the schoolroom.

2. Rectangles which are exactly as wide as they are long are called squares. Find squares in the room.

3. How long is the rectangle on page 134? How wide? What is the area of it?

4. Draw a rectangle which is 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. Divide it into square inches. How many long rows are there? How many square inches are in each?

2X4 square inches are

5. How many short rows are there in your rectangle? How many square inches are in each?

4X2 square inches are

6. Draw a rectangle 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. Give the area.

7. Give the area in square inches of rectangles having length and width as follows:
