1. Read the following numbers:

2. Perhaps you see larger numbers than these every day, on railway cars, in the newspapers, and in other places. You should always be ready to read them. Ten thousand is written 10,000.

Fifteen thousand is written 15,000.
Fifty thousand is written 50,000.

1. One day an office of the state motor-vehicle department issued license plates with all the numbers from 107,975 to 108,032. Write in order the numbers of the license plates that were issued.

2. Every trolley car and every railway passenger car has a number. Copy some of the numbers that you see on trolley cars and railway passenger cars.

3. Every freight car has a number that is painted on the side of the car. It also has a number showing the weight of the car and another showing its capacity, or how much weight it will carry. Copy the numbers on some of the freight cars that you see.

4. The boxes in post offices are numbered. What is the largest number on a box in your post office?

5. The houses and the stores in cities and towns are

numbered. Give the numbers of some of the stores on a street of a town or city that you know.

6. The conductors and the motormen on the trolley cars have numbers on their caps, and policemen have numbers on their badges. Copy some of the numbers you see.

6. United States Coins and Bills

The coins of United States money are made at government mints. There are mints in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. All money is made by the United States Government, and it is unlawful for any one to make either coins or paper money.

The gold coins in use are the five, ten, and twenty

dollar gold pieces. They are not, however, in common circulation.

The paper money of the United States is made at the

U. S. Bureau of Engraving in Washington, D. C. The following bills now in use are:

The one-dollar bill.
The two-dollar bill.
The five-dollar bill.

The fifty-dollar bill.

The one-hundred-dollar bill.
The five-hundred-dollar bill.
The one-thousand-dollar bill.

The ten-dollar bill.

The twenty-dollar bill.

The ten-thousand-dollar bill.

A bank teller cashed checks for the following amounts, using the largest bills possible. Tell how many bills, of each kind, he gave out in cashing these checks:

Play that you are the cashier, or paying teller, in a bank. When a person comes up to the window with a check, you must cash it and give him the kind of money he wants, in coins or in bills.

1. A man hands you a two-dollar check and says, "Please give me half of this in dimes and half in nickels." How many dimes should you give him? How many nickels?

2. Another man hands you a 2-dollar check and says, "Please give me this in quarters." How many quarters should you give him?

3. A man sends you a 5-dollar check with a request
