9. William Finds Some Uses for Addition

William worked in Mr. Frost's grocery store after school hours. He told his teacher about his work and she asked him to bring to class on Monday morning some addition problems he had used at the store. He brought the following problems for his classmates to solve:

[graphic][subsumed][subsumed]

1. A lady came into the store and bought 7 different articles. They were: a package of Corn Flakes for 13 cents, 42 cents' worth of sugar, a pound of coffee for 39 cents, a peck of potatoes for 85 cents, a yeast cake for 3 cents, a loaf of bread for 9 cents, and a pound of cheese for 36 cents. How much was her bill?

2. Mr. Frost asked me to keep an account of the receipts from the sale of candy during the week. The sales were as follows: Monday, $6.42; Tuesday, $4.08; Wednesday, $8.11; Thursday, $3.17; Friday, $5.27; Saturday, $12.50. What were the total receipts from the week's sale of candy?

3. When Mr. Frost closed his store on Saturday night, I helped him count his cash. He had 12 tendollar bills, 22 five-dollar bills, 37 one-dollar bills, 48 half dollars, 32 quarters, 80 dimes, 75 nickels, and 27 pennies. How much cash did he have?

4. Mr. Frost wanted to check up the charged sales for the day. He gave me the following amounts to add: $17.84, $2.08, $4.73, $9.85, $11.14, $.84, and $29.60. I added them and told Mr. Frost the total was $75.08. He looked over the figures and said that I had made a mistake. Can you find the mistake?

10. Practice in Adding

1. After discussing William's experience in the store, the class decided it would be a good idea to practice adding, since addition is so much used in business. Every one agreed that only correct answers are of any use. Perhaps you need practice, too. See if you can find correct answers for every one of the following examples:
