6. Estimate in rods and yards the length of the front of the school lot; the depth of it.

7. Now find the length and width in rods and yards. Give the distance in feet.

8. Do you live more or less than a mile from school? 9. How many yards make a mile?

10. Which is the longer, a quarter of a mile or 500 yards? How much longer?

11. Which is the longer, of a mile or 880 yards? How much longer?

12. Change or reduce:

9 yd. to feet.

2 rd. to yards.

4 yd. and 1 ft. to feet.

48 in. to feet.

36 ft. to yards.

1 ft. and 6 in. to inches.

75. Drawing to a Scale

When a small drawing is made of any large area such as the floor of a room, a city lot, or a field of grain, it is necessary to represent several feet or yards or several rods by a fraction of an inch. Making a drawing in

in

this way is called "drawing to a scale."

This is a drawing of a garden that is 20 feet long and

15 feet wide. The drawing is made to the scale of

inch to 5 feet.

12

Since inch represents 5 feet, the line that represents 20 ft. is 2 inches long. Why?

The line that represents 15 ft. is 1 in. long. Why?

The following drawing represents the floor of a room that is 24 feet long and 16 feet wide. The scale used is of an inch to a foot. How many inches long should this drawing be? How wide should it be? Measure it to see if it is correctly drawn.

1. Make a drawing of a schoolroom that is 32 feet long and 24 feet wide. Make your drawing to the scale of of an inch to 1 foot.

2. Make a drawing of your schoolroom, using a scale of in. to a foot.

See how many of these questions you can answer without using your pencil:

1. Some of these children are finding the distance around the school building. This distance is called the perimeter. If the building is 60 ft. wide and 80 ft. long what is its perimeter?

Perimeter = distance around.

2. If the school yard in which the class is making measurements is 90 ft. by 120 ft., what is its perimeter? 3. There is a triangular flower bed in the school yard which is 20 ft. on a side. What is its perimeter? 4. There is a square flower bed 15 ft. on a side. What is its perimeter?

5. Find the perimeter of your schoolroom.

6. Find the perimeter of your school yard.

1. Remember:

77. Measuring Area

A square with each side 1 inch is a square inch.
square with each side 1 foot is a square foot.

Α

A square with each side 1 yard is a square yard.

2. Draw a square with each side 1 foot long. Using dots, mark off each side into inches. Connect the dots. How many rows of square inches are there? How many square inches in each row? How many square inches in all?

[blocks in formation]

3. Draw a square whose sides are 1 yard long. Divide each side into feet by placing dots 1 foot apart. Connect the dots on opposite sides of the square.

[blocks in formation]

4. How many square feet are there in a square yard? In 2 square yards?

5. You have learned a quick way of finding the area of a rectangle by multiplying the length by the width. Find the area of:

A tulip bed 12 feet long and 8 feet wide.

A path 254 feet long and 9 feet wide.

A field 36 yards long and 28 yards wide.

A building lot 60 feet wide and 125 feet deep.

6. Estimate the number of square yards in the floor. Test by multiplying the length by the width. Omit any inches in either the length or the width.

78. Square Measure

1. Tell which of the units of measure given in the table below you would use in stating the area of:

The school yard.
A field of corn.

Your farm.

The schoolroom floor.

Your teacher will let you draw on the ground a square 5 yards or a rod on a side. This square contains 30 square yards. It is a square rod. An acre contains 160 of such square rods.

Table of Square Measure

144 square inches (sq. in.) = 1 square foot (sq. ft.)

9 square feet

(sq. ft.) = 1 square yard(sq. yd.)

30 square yards (sq. yd.) = 1 square rod (sq. rd.)

160 square rods

(sq. rd.) = 1 acre

(A.)

2. Which has the greater floor space, a room 18 feet by 12 feet, or a room 16 feet by 15 feet? How much greater is one than the other?

3. A school has a garden 56 feet by 32 feet. How many square feet does it contain?

4. Which is the larger, a rug 6 feet by 8 feet or one 5 feet by 9 feet? How much larger?

5. Which is the smaller, a room 12 feet by 18 feet or a room 14 feet by 16 feet? How much smaller?

6. Calculate the area of your schoolroom. Give the answer in square feet.
