27. Using the Thermometer

A thermometer is a glass tube filled with a liquid that rises when the weather becomes warmer and falls when the weather is colder.

On page 77 there is a picture of a thermometer. The figures show the number of degrees of temperature. The sign stands for degree or degrees. From 68° to 70° is the proper temperature for a schoolroom in winter.

1. With a real thermometer measure the temperature of your schoolroom.

2. If the temperature of a schoolroom is 78°, how much too high is it?

3. Put the thermometer outside the window. Does the mercury rise or fall? How much?

4. Put the thermometer in cold water and tell what happens to the mercury. How much does it change?

5. Now put the thermometer in a warm place and tell what happens to the mercury. 6. What is meant by "below zero"? Have you ever felt "below zero" weather? Where?

7. How many degrees above zero is the freezing point? Blood heat? The boiling point?

8. One day in a certain city the highest temperature was 71°; the lowest was 39°. How many degrees did the thermometer fall during the day?

9. How many degrees are there between freezing point and blood heat? Between freezing point and boiling point?

10. Find what the temperature was yesterday, both the highest point and the lowest. Give the difference between the two.

11. Find the temperature today. What is the weather prediction for tomorrow?

12. What people watch weather predictions and temperature records most closely? Why?

13. Give the temperature of your classroom for one week.
