Declension of Substantives.

The Swedish Language has five declensions for the substantive, regulated by the termination of the nominative plural. The Nominative, Dative and Accusative of the substantives are all alike. The Genitive is formed by adding,,s"; or with the definitive article ens or ets; there occurs also an antiquated termination in sens, as:

dagsens for dagens riksens for rikets, etc.

Words ending in s and x remain unchanged if they are without the definite article, as: prins, Prince and of the Prince; sax, scissors and of the scissors; but if they are with the indefinite article they form:

en prinses, of a Prince en saxes, of scissors

The Plural of the 1st declension ends in or

With the exception of substantives ending in a and most

of those ending in e, they are declined by adding the following terminations:

To this declension belong many masculine substantives

ending in e, ing, dom, omme.

Most words of this declension are masculine.
Obs. 1. The following are feminine:

3rd Declension.

To this Declension belong masculine, feminine and neuter nouns, ending in ad, else, skap, het, i (except bi).

Obs. 1. Those ending in an accented vowel, drop the e of the definite Article in the Singular and Plural, as: sko, shoe skon, the shoe skor, shoes except those in i, and åbo, fru, etc.

Obs. 2. Those ending in el and er, drop the e in the Singular before the definite Article. Those in el drop it also n the Plural, as:

fabel, fable
fabler

broder, brother

bröder

fablen, the fable

brodren, the brother
bröderna.

Obs. 3. Many modify their vowels in the Plural, as: tång, tänger — bonde, bänder natt, nätter. Obs. 4. Those in t and some in n double the final consonant in the Plural, as:

4th Declension.

To this Declension belong all neuters, ending in a consonant, and those in are.

Obs. 1. Those in el, er, en, drop the e before the definite Article in the Singular and Plural, as:

vatten, water vattnet, the water

Obs. 2. Those ending in f, receive a v before the Ar

ticle, as:

bref, letter brefvet, the letter Pl. brefven.

Obs. 1. Those ending in a or e, only add a t, as:
