Some branch schools are carried on in connection with the College. Several scholarships have been endowed, one by Sir H. Ramsay, C.B., K.C.S.I., a warm supporter of the School from its commencement, and two by the Raja of Tehri and Garhwal. A number of scholarships. are also given by the District Committee to poor village boys to assist them in studying for Entrance into the College at Roorkee, Lahore, or Agra.

ST. GEORGE'S COLLEGE, MUSSOORIE.

AFFILIATED IN ARTS, 1890.

This College, generally known as the Manor House, was founded by Bishop Carli in 1853, and is under the control of the Archbishop of Agra. The institution, though under Catholic management, is open to Catholics and Protestants alike, and the religion of the latter is in no way interfered with.

The course of studies embraces the subjects for both departments, of the Roorkee Engineering College, the Survey Department, the Government Education Department, High Standard, the University of Allahabad and other public examinations.

The College can accommodate 200 Boarders, and further extensive additions are being made to the present buildings.

The institution is under the control of the Local Government Education Department.

ST. PETER'S COLLEGE, AGRA.

AFFILIATED IN ARTS, 1890.

St. Peter's College was founded in 1845, and is under the patronage of the Most Rev. the Archbishop of Agra. It prepares students for the High Standard of the Code for European Schools, as also for the Matriculation and Intermediate Examinations of the Allahabad University and for several public service examinations.

Parlour Boarders are admitted at Rs. 25 and ordinary Boarders at Rs. 15 each a month. The fees for day scholars are Rs. 4, 6, and 8 for the School Department and Rs. 4 for the College Department.

To St. Peter's College is attached St. Paul's School for orphan lads and poorer children. The maximum fee here is Rs. 8 per mensem. Both St. Peter's and St. Paul's undergo the same course of instruction.

PHILANDER SMITH COLLEGE, NAINI TAL.

AFFILIATED IN ARTS, 1891.

This School was founded by the liberality of Mrs. Philander Smith of Oak Park, Qes., U. S. A., as a memorial

to her husband, a noble spirited Christian layman. It was opened in Mussoorie in 1885 under the name of the Philander Smith Institute, and under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church in India.

In January, 1905, the Institute was amalgamated with the Oak Openings High School, Naini Tal, a school also under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the name changed to the Philander Smith College, the entire property of both former schools founded for the new school, and the new school established on the more commodious and desirable site in Naini Tal. This School now occupies one of the most magnificent school sites in all India-a wooded estate of about 40 acres, over 7,500 feet above sea level. The plant itself is being rapidly extended and equipped. Re-affiliation to the Intermediate Arts was granted in 1905.

Founded in 1861 (affiliated in Arts up to the First Arts Standard of the Calcutta University in 1883) under the patronage of the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop

of Lucknow. Special training for teachers. Scholarships tenable by pupils of the School only. The School is managed and controlled by a Committee of Residents of Allahabad. Special provision is made and special advantages offered to students for the Intermediate Standard in Arts of the University of Allahabad. B.A. classes also have been opened.

KAYASTHA PATHSHALA, ALLAHABAD.

AFFILIATED IN ARTS, 1895.

The Kayastha Pathshala was founded in 1872 by the late Munshi Kali Prasad, of the Lucknow Bar. In 1878 it was raised to the Middle English Standard and in 1883 to the Entrance Standard of the Calcutta University. In 1894 it was included by the Allahabad University in the list of schools recognized for the purposes of the School-Final Examination. In 1895 it was affiliated to the same University up to the Intermediate Examination Standard. The first year class was opened in July, 1895, and the second year in July, 1896.

The institution was registered on August 2nd, 1893, under Act XXI of 1860, the chief controlling authority being the President for the time being, assisted by a Committee of Management. Its income is derived from an endowment of property made mainly by the late

Munshi Kali Prasad and partly by others which was estimated to be worth Rs. 6,72,069-3-9 on the 30th of June 1906.

The institution is divided into College and School Departments, the former under the immediate charge and the latter under the superintendence of the Principal.

In the College Department the scale of fees charged ordinarily is Rs. 3 per mensem, payable during ten months in the session. There are 20 free scholarships, ten in the first year and ten in the second year class, for poor students who have passed the Entrance or the SchoolFinal Examination in the first division. In the School Department the scale of fees is proportionate to the income of guardians of boys, Chitra-gupta Vanshi Kayasthas paying lower fees than students belonging to other castes. There is a large number of free scholars in both College and School Departments, belonging mainly to the Kayastha community. Kayastha students, moreover, receive monthly scholarships and aid, the total amount spent yearly for this purpose exceeding Rs. 2,500. There is a Boarding House for Kayastha students, where the monthly fee charged is Rs. 8 per head.
