2,0)279 yards at 35. per yd. 2,0)2880 yards at 195. per yd.

[blocks in formation]

Qu. 16. What is the value of 5514 yards, at 1s. per yard? -Ans. 2751. 145.

Qu. 17. What is the value of 2468 yards, at 5s. per yard? Ans, 6171.

Note. When the price is 55. as in the last question, the given number may be divided by 4, as 5 is of a pound, and the quotient is the answer in pounds.

And when the price is 25. it is done at fight, by doubling the first figure on the right hand for fhillings, and the other figures are pounds.

Example 18. What, is the value of 896 gallons of cyder at 25. per gallon? 89l. 12s. Anfwer. :

By this method of working by 25 a variety of examples may be wrought very expeditiously, by dividing the given price into parts of 25. each, and finding the value of the overplus, if any.

Example 19. What is the value of 444 gallons of Hollands, at 5s. 9d. per gallon?

For 25. per gallon I take
For the other 25. per gallon
For the 15. half the 25. line
For the 6d. half the 1. line
For the 3d. half the 6d. line
And then add them together for the Anf.

In this manner examples in this rule may be wrought, though the price confift of any number of fhillings and pence, and which would fuperfede the neceffity of fome of the following rules. I fhall nevertheless infert them, that the work appear not deficient.

Cafe 5. When the price is fhillings and pence, which make an aliquot part of a pound, divide the given quantity by fuch aliquot part.

Example 20. What is the value of 2796 dollars, at 35. 4d. dollar? 6)2796

Answer 4661.

Here I divide the given number by 6, as 35. 4d. is the Sixth part of a pound,

Qu. 21. What is the value of 3575 yards, at rs. 8d. per yard ? Anf. 2971. 185. 4d.

Qu. 22. What is the value of 2478 gallons of spirits, at 6s. 8d. per gallon ?-Anf. 8261.

Qu. 23. What is the value of 2793 yards of linen, at 28. 6d. per yard ?...Ans. 3491. 25. Od,

Cafe 6. When the price confifts of fhillings and pence, or fhillings, pence, and farthings, which do not make an aliquot part of a pound, divide the given number by the greatest aliquot part of a pound that the price contains; and for the remainder of the price, if any, confider what aliquot part it is of the former aliquot part, and divide the quotient thereby; and if there ftill be a remainder of the price, confider what aliquot part it is of the laft aliquot part, and divide the laft quotient thereby: and proceed in this manner as long as there is any remainder of the price: then the fum of all the quotients will be the answer.

Example 24. What is the value of 3726 yards of cloth, at 75. 444. per yard?

3)3726 10)1242

[merged small][ocr errors][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

In this example, I divide the given number by 3, for 65. 8d. as that is the third part of a pound; the quotient I again divide by 10, for the 8d. remaining, as 8d. is the tenth part of 6. 8d.; and this quotient I again divide by 16, for the halfpenny, as that is the fixteenth part of 8d. then the three quotients added together give the answer.

Or the price may be divided into the aliquot parts of a pound, and then the given number must be divided by each of them; thus, in the foregoing example, the given number of yards may be divided by 5 for 45, the fifth part of a pound, and 6 for the other 35. 44. the fixth part of a pound, and for the halfpenny the given number may be divided by 24, the aliquot part of a fhilling, and this laft quotient is fhillings; and the three quotients added together is the answer.

Qu, 25. What is the value of 784 gallons, at 6s. 94. per gallon?-Anf. 264ł. 125.

Qu. 26. What is the value of 1464 gallons, at 125. 7d. per gallon?-Anf. quil. 25.

Cafe 7. When the price is pounds, fhillings, pence, and farthings, multiply the given number by the number of pounds, and the product is pounds; then for the remainder of the price, work according to fome of the former rules, as the cafe may require; and these fums added together will give the answer.

Example 27. What is the value of 416 cwt. of fugar, at 21. 95. 3 d. per cwt, ?

[blocks in formation]

For the 2 I multiply the given number by 2, and the product 832 is pounds; then for the Ss. I multiply the given number by 4, fetting the double of the unit figure apart for fhillings, as directed in the fourth cafe; for the is. I take the eighth part of the 8s. line; for the 3d. I take the fourth part of the Is. line; and for the I take the fourth part of the 3d. line and the fum of thefe is the answer.

Qu. 28. What is the value of 1894 pieces of linen, at 47. 155. 10d. per piece?-Arf 90771. 75. 9 d.

Cafe 8. When the number of integers whofe value is required is a whole number with fractions annexed, find the value of the whole number by fome of the foregoing rules, to which add the value of the parts represented by the fractions.

Example 29. What is the value of 278cwt. 84lb. of foap, at 11. 195. 4d. per cwt.?

[blocks in formation]

In this example, after finding the value of the 278 cwt. at the given price, I find that 84lb. is of an cwt. I therefore take of the given price, viz. 19s. 8d. for the cwt. and for the other cwt. I take of the price, 9s. 10d.

Qu. 30. What is the value of 568 pieces of cloth, at 21. 10s. 6d. per piecë ?— Anf. 1435l. 9s. 3d.

Cafe 9. When the quantity whofe value is fought is of feveral denominations, firft, find the value of the greatest denomination; and for the other denominations, take an equivalent part or parts of the given price; and add the fèveral fums together for the anfwer.

Example 31. What is the value of 10cwt. 2qrs. 21lb. of tobacco, at 41. 55. 6d. per cwt. ?

[blocks in formation]

The cwt. being the greatest denomination, is found first, by multiplying the price of an cwt. by 10, and for the value of the 2qrs. I take half the price of an cwt. then for the 21lb. I first find the value of 14lb. by taking half the price of a qr. or a fourth part of 2qrs. and half this price for the other 7lb.; these fums added together give the answer.

Qu. 32. What is the value of 28yds. 31qrs. of superfine cloth, at 30s, per yard? Anf. 431. 65. 3d.

BARTER is that rule which inftructs traders to exchange one commodity for another, fo that neither party may sustain any lofs.

Rule. Find the value of that commodity whofe quantity is given, by the rule of three or practice; then by the rule of three, practice, or divifion, find what quantity of the other commodity should be given in exchange.

Example 1. How many gallons of brandy, at 6s. per gallon, must be given in barter for 7cwt. 2qrs. 14lb. of fugar, at 27. 10s. per cwt. ?
