Everyday Use of Addition and Subtraction

As an oral lesson, tell whether you will add or subtract to find each answer. Then work the problems for written work.

1. There are 323 pupils in our school. Of these, 157 are girls. How many are boys?

2. In a certain school, there are 247 boys and 263 girls. How many children are in the school?

3. Henry wishes to set out 75 tomato plants in his garden. He has already set out 48 plants. He still has to set out

plants.

4. Dan had 60 papers to sell. He sold all except 12 of them. How many did he sell?

5. Charles had 27 marbles. He bought 25 more marbles. Then he had marbles.

6. A box full of soap weighed 56 pounds. The box alone weighed 8 pounds. How much did the soap weigh?

7. Henry set out 28 cabbage plants. After he sets out 37 more, he will have cabbage plants set out. 8. In our room, 32 children tried a speed test in addition. If 28 children passed, how many did not pass?

9. Robert weighed 57 pounds on one birthday and 63 pounds on his next birthday. How many pounds. did he gain during the year?

10. Count the number of boys in your class. Count the number of girls. Now find in the shortest way how many children are in your class.

Multiplication with 9

(a) Count by 9's to 90.

(b) Write in columns and add: Two 9's, three 9's, four 9's, up to ten 9's.

(c) How many players are there in one baseball team? How many in 2 teams? In 4 teams?

Everyday Use of Multiplication

1. If Nora reads 9 pages a day, how many pages will she read in 13 days?

2. Find the cost of 7 yards of cheese cloth at 15 cents a yard.

3. If each bench holds 8 people, how many people will 24 benches hold?

4. There are 6 rows of potatoes in father's garden. Each row is 85 feet long. How many feet in 6 rows?

5. There are 14 weeks in our summer vacation. How many days is this?

6. How many eggs are 5 dozen eggs?

7. Little Jean has 35 cents in her bank. Nan has 6 times as much. How much has Nan?

The teacher or one of the pupils will act as umpire. The pupils are divided into two equal lines, facing either end of the blackboard. When the teacher says "Go," each leader

will run to the board, choose one of the teacher's examples, and copy it on his end of the board, writing the answer under the example. When the umpire says the answer is correct, the leader will erase the teacher's example which he has copied, and run back to the rear of his line. The next pupil in that line will run to the board and work another of the teacher's examples, and so on. The team which first works half of the teacher's examples wins the race.
