Roman Numbers

(a) The Romans, who lived many years ago, did not make numbers as we do, but used letters instead of figures. Our way of making numbers is easier, but we still use the Roman numbers in some places.

(b) Look at page 1. ter 1," what is used?

Instead of the heading "Chap

Look at page 97.

Instead of

the heading "Chapter 2," what is used? What capital letter is used instead of 1?

(c) Roman numbers are also used on many clocks. Study the two clock faces above. Write on the board a table showing the Roman numbers up to twelve, starting I = 1, II 2, and so on.

(d) What does each I stand for in III?

(e) What does V stand for? When you put I in front of the V does it take away 1 from the 5, or add 1 to 5?

When you put I after V does it add or take away 1? How do you make the Roman seven? The Roman

(f) What does X stands for? When I is placed in front of the X what does it stand for? The I after X? How do you make the Roman twelve?

(g) Explain how these Roman numbers are made:

[blocks in formation]

(a) Draw a clockface on the board.

If you have a cardboard clockface with movable hands attached, it may be used instead of drawing the clockfaces on the board.

(b) The long hand is called the minute hand. It moves around the clock once in each hour in the direction shown by the arrows.

(c) The short hand is called the hour hand. It moves from one num

ber to the next number in one hour.

(d) When the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand to 1, it is 1 o'clock. When the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand to 2, it is 2 o'clock. Tell where the hands point at 3 o'clock; at 5 o'clock; at 12 o'clock.

(e) When the minute hand moves from 12 to 6, it has passed round onehalf of the clockface. When the minute hand points to 6, we say it is "half past" the hour. The clock at the left shows half past 1. On the board draw a clock with the hands at half past 2; half past 9.

(f) When the minute hand moves from 12 to 3, it has passed round one-fourth, or one quarter of the clockface. When the minute hand points to 3, it is "quarter past" the hour. The clock at the left shows quarter past 9. Draw hands showing quarter past 1; quarter past 6..

(g) Look at the figure at the right. When the minute hand points to 9, what part of the clockface has it still to pass before it comes to the even hour (12)? When the minute hand points to 9, it is quarter of the hour.

(h) The little spaces on the edge of the clock stand for minutes. How many minutes does the minute hand pass over when it moves from 12 to 1? When the minute hand points to 1, it is 5 minutes past or "after" the hour. How many minutes past the hour is it when the minute hand points to 2? to 4? to 5? The clock at the right shows 5 minutes past 12.

(i) When the minute hand points to 11, it is 5 minutes "of" the hour. How many minutes "of" the hour when the minute hand points to 10? to 8? to 7? WRITTEN WORK
