Everyday Use of Multiplication

How much will 245 pounds of sugar cost at 8¢ a pound? We know the cost of 1 pound of sugar. 245 pounds will cost 245 times the cost of 1 pound. But to multiply $.08 by 245 would take too long. So we multiply 245 by .08 and write $ in the

In explaining this problem we say, "One pound of sugar costs 8 cents. Then 245 pounds of sugar will cost 245 times 8 cents, or $19.60."

5. If one bushel of wheat weighs 60 lb., how much will 1290 bushels weigh?

6. How many bushels of wheat would a farmer get from 176 acres at 19 bu. per acre?

7. How many cents will 20 doz. pencils cost at 25¢ a dozen? Write your answer as dollars and cents.

8. Joe received 60¢ a bushel for picking cranberries. He picked 29 bushels. How much money did he receive?

STARTING OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

1. Our room started a library. Bob's father said he would buy the boards for a bookcase, if the boys would build it. He bought 8 boards costing 25¢ each. How much did the boards cost in all?

2. Bob's father bought some boards for a table, too. He said he bought 27 feet of lumber for the table, costing 6¢ a foot. How much did the lumber for the table cost?

3. Each pupil who wanted to borrow books from the new library had to join our Library Club by paying 5¢. Twentythree pupils joined the club. How much money did they pay in all?

4. We had a tag day, and sold 87 tags at 3¢ each. How much did we get for our tags?

5. Our teacher gave 13 books for the library. Mary gave 5, Ned's father gave 17, and Jean's mother gave 21. How many books is this in all?

6. The boys played a baseball game and made $2.70 on gate receipts. The girls sold $3.85 worth of candy. How much did the boys and girls make together? Did the boys or the girls make more? How much more?

7. We gave a picnic party and sold 6 gallons of ice cream. If 1 gallon of ice cream serves 28 people, how many people could we serve with 6 gallons?

8. One loaf of bread makes 18 sandwiches. We used 14 loaves. How many sandwiches did we make from 14 loaves?

9. In one week Edith saved 15¢ from her allowance by doing without candy, and earned 10¢ for washing dishes, 13¢ by weeding the garden, and 25¢ by running errands. She gave all this money to the library. How much did she give to the library?

10. With the money we earned, we bought 68 books at 49¢ each. How much did the 68 books cost?
