HEALTH CRUSADERS

1. All of the 28 children in our schoolroom are Health Crusaders. In November, the boys said they did more health chores on the average than the girls. The 13 boys did 3653 chores in all. The 15 girls did 4185 chores. Was the boys' average or the girls' average higher? How much higher? 2. In December, Ned, Dick, and Stephen raced to see which should do the most chores. Ned did 9 chores a day for 18 days, and 10 chores a day for 13 days. Dick did 10 chores a day for 6 days, 9 chores a day for 21 days, and 11 chores a day for 4 days. Stephen did 285 chores in all. Which boy did the most chores?

3. Hilda went to bed every night at 7:45 P.M., and got up every morning at 7: 15 A.M. Did she spend at least 10 hours

in bed every night?

4. Edith played outdoors from quarter past 3 till 5 minutes of 4. Did she spend at least half an hour playing outdoors? How long did she play?

5. Harry goes to bed at 8 P.M. If he gets up at 7 A.M., how many hours has he spent in bed?

6. Each morning our teacher asks us how many of us did each chore the day before. This morning she found that all 28 of us had done the first chore; 24 had done the second chore; 24 the third chore; 25 the fourth chore; 23 the fifth; 27 the sixth; 20 the seventh; 23 the eighth; 26 the ninth; 25 the tenth; and 9 the eleventh. What was the average number of chores done?

Make up a problem like problem 6. Use the number of pupils in your room who have done each health chore yesterday.

By "standard" is meant the number of examples you should work correctly in the given time.

Keep your own record each time you try the following speed tests.

TIMED TEST IN ADDITION

(a) Try the following test in the addition combinations. A fifth-grade pupil should be able to write all 40 sums in 1 minute or less. Write the answers on a folded sheet of paper which you place below the examples, and unfold as you finish each row. Your teacher will tell you when to start and when to stop.

Exchange papers, and mark the mistakes as the teacher reads the correct sums. Write your scores of the number of examples you get right on a sheet of paper as shown on page 267.

If you have difficulty in passing this test, practice it orally. You should be able to name all the sums in 1 minute, reading in any
