Division by 2 and 4 with a Remainder

(a) How many 2-cent stamps can you buy for 5 cents? How many cents will you have left? 2 is contained in 5, 2 times, with 1 left over. We call the number left over, the remainder. We may show this division like this:

2 and 1 r.

What does "r." stand for?

(b) Divide: 2)15.

If you cannot see at once how many times 2 is contained in 15, look at the table of 2's at the left, and pick out the largest number less than 15. It is 14. 14 is how many 2's? Then 2 is contained in 15, 7 times, with a remainder of 1.

(c) Divide: 2)13 2)7 2)11 2)17 2)19 What is the largest remainder you can have when you divide by 2?

(d) If oranges cost 4 cents each, how many oranges can you buy for 10 cents? How many cents will you have left?

What is the largest remainder you can have when you

divide by 4?

Short Division

(a) Divide 468 by 2.

Start dividing at the left.

Think 2 is contained in 4, 2 times. Write 2.

(b) If you divide no marbles (0 marbles) between 2 boys how many marbles will each boy get? No marbles, of course. 0 ÷ 2 = 0 0 ÷ 4 = 0 O divided by any number equals 0.

(c) Divide 240 by 4.

4 is contained in 24, 6 times.

60 Quotient

4 is contained in 0, 0 times.

4)240

Notice where the figures of the quotient are written.

79 Quotient

Divisor 4)316 Dividend

4 is contained in 31, 7 times with 3 remainder. Write 7 over 1; carry the 3 remainder in front Write

of the 6, making 36. 4 is contained in 36, 9 times. 9 over 6.

(b) In division, the number we divide by is called the divisor. The number divided into is called the dividend. In the example above, what is the divisor? The dividend? The quotient?

(c) We may check the example above (that is, make sure the answer is correct) by multiplying the quotient, 79, by the divisor 4. The product should be the dividend, 316.

To check an example in division, multiply the quotient by the divisor to get the dividend.
