1. The territory of the United States embraces the middle division of North America, extending from the Atlantic ocean, on the east, to the Pacific on the west; nearly 3,000 miles from east to west, and 1,700 from north to south.

The vast extent of country between the Alleghany and Rocky Mountains, is, for the most part, but moderately uneven.

7. The two great ranges of mountains are the Alleghanies in the east, and the Rocky Mountains in the west. The Alleghany Mountains extend from Alabama into the state of New York; or, according to some, nearly to the mouth of the St. Lawrence, including the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
