Excerpt from A New Introduction to the Science of Algebra

To remove these difficulties, is the object of the short trea tise on arithmetic, with which this volume commences. In it, an attempt has been made to explain, with clearness and brevity, the connexion between numbers, and the quantities they are used to express; and also to give concise and satis factory demonstrations of the rules for numerical calculations. The second chapter is necessarily more full than any other part of the arithmetic, inasmuch as a thorough knowledge of fractions, both vulgar and decimal, is an indispensable prepa ration for the study of algebra, and the same demonstrations apply both to numerical and algebraic fractions.

Having accustomed the pupil to reasoning upon numbers, in the first three chapters, letters, as the representatives of numbers, are first introduced in the fourth; and the same reasoning applied to them, which immediately before, had been applied to the numbers themselves, thus preparing the way for the use of algebraic symbols, and making the tran sitiou from arithmetic to algebra easy and pleasant.
