IV. Questions given at the Scholarship Examination will be based upon the following Syllabus.

Reading and Repetition. To read with fluency, ease, and expression. Passages for repetition in prose and poetry will probably be asked for, and must be of a secular character, and taken from some standard English writer, by Her Majesty's Inspector.

English Grammar and Composition.-To point out the parts of speech in a simple sentence, and to write from dictation in a neat hand, with correct spelling and punctuation, a passage of simple prose.

Copy writing, one line of large hand, and one of small hand, will be required.

The noun, verb, adjective, with their relations in a simple sentence; and to write from memory the substance of a passage of simple prose, read with ordinary quickness, or to write a short letter or theme.

The pronoun, adverb, preposition, with their relations in

a sentence.

The conjunction, with the analysis of sentences; and to write full notes of a lesson on a subject selected by the Inspector.

The meaning in English of the Latin prepositions (Latin prefixes).

To know something of the sources and growth of the English language; and to write an original composition on some simple subject selected by Her Majesty's Inspector.

Arithmetic and Mathematics.-To write from dictation, and work correctly, sums in the first four rules of Arithmetic, simple and compound, including weights and measures.

MALES.

Practice and Proportion (Simple and Compound).-Vulgar and Decimal Fractions. Interest and Percentages. Euclid, Books I. and II.-Mensuration of Plane Surfaces, and Algebra to Quadratic Equations (inclusive).

FEMALES.

Practice and Bills of Parcels.-Proportion (Simple and Compound).-Vulgar and Decimal Fractions, and Interest. Geography.-Geographical definitions.-The distribution of land and water; the outlines of England and Wales.— The British Isles, Europe, the Colonies, Asia, Africa, America, and the Oceans. (Maps to be drawn.)

History. The succession of the English sovereigns from the reign of Egbert, with dates, to the present time. -Outlines of British History to the present time.

Teaching. To answer questions on class-teaching, so as to satisfy Her Majesty's Inspector of power to conduct a division of the school, or to manage grouped classes in the class-room, and specially to give a collective lesson.

Additional Subject.-A paper will be set, at the examination of candidates for admission to Training Schools, in Latin, Greek, French, and German.

This paper will contain grammatical questions, and easy passages for translation into English, and is optional.

Marks will also be given to any candidate at the examination, who, at one of the examinations held in May of each year by the Department of Science and Art,1 has taken a first class in the elementary stage, or passed in the advanced stage of one of the following subjects: Mechanics, Chemistry, Animal Physiology, Acoustics, Light and Heat, Magnetism and Electricity, Physical Geography, or Botany.

Candidates may obtain marks at the admission examination for any one (but not more) of the above eleven subjects.

Drawing.2-Pupil Teachers who, during their apprenticeship, successfully work exercises in freehand, geometry, perspective, model, and blackboard Drawing, are credited with marks at the scholarship and certificate examinations.

The exercises may be worked in any order, except that Pupil Teachers cannot be examined in blackboard Drawing till they have passed in all the other subjects.

Pupil Teachers who have been taught Drawing in their own schools, should be examined there in March. They cannot be examined in Drawing on the occasion of Her Majesty's Inspector's annual visit.

Pupil Teachers may study and be examined in May, at any of the Schools of Art or Art Night-classes connected with the Department of Science and Art.

Pupil Teachers, although not studying at a School of Art or Art Night-class, may, with the consent of the committee, be examined there if there be no March examination at their own school.

An annual examination in Drawing is also held in November at each of the Training Colleges, and Pupil Teachers who have no opportunity of being examined in March or
