Tell which fractions are less than 1, equal to 1, and more

[blocks in formation]

Since the lower term of a fraction shows the number of parts into which the whole was divided, dividing it into the upper term shows the number of whole things in the improper fraction.

Such numbers as 11, 21, 12, 57, and 63 are called mixed numbers, for they are made up of whole numbers and fractions.

1. In an apple, how many halves? How many fourths?

3. One half of an apple will make how many fourths? Then one half and one fourth are how many fourths?

3. When baking some pies and cakes, Helen's mother used 2 cups of sugar for the cakes and 11⁄2 cups of sugar for the pies. How much did she use for all?

Think," = 4." Then think, " + 1 + 1 = 4.” Then think," of a cup makes just 1 cup." So there is 1 to carry and no fraction to write down. Or think, "+= 1 1 + 1 = 1."

5. To make some oatmeal cookies, Martha's mother used 2 cups of oatmeal and 12 cups of graham flour. How many cups did the mixture make?

Think, “1 or 2 and make 5, which is a whole cup and more." Write Carry 1.

6. For Sunday dinner, John's mother bought two ducks. One weighed 52 lb. and the other weighed 61⁄2 lb. How much did both weigh?

7. Sydney sold three chickens. One weighed 31⁄2 lb., one 22 lb., and the third 3 lb. Find the weight of all and how much he got for them at 45¢ per lb.

8. Will sold four rabbits weighing 4 lb., 42 lb., 44 lb., and 32 lb. Find how much he got for them at 30¢

per lb.

9. Helen needed 1 yd. of ribbon for a sash and yd. for each of two hair ribbons. If she buys it all in one piece, for how much shall she ask? What will it cost at 64¢ per yd.?

Notice that when the lower term is multiplied by 2 or 4, the upper term is also multiplied by the same number.

1. How many fourths in one half?

2. How many eighths in one half?

3. How many eighths in one fourth?

4. If you eat of a pie and your brother eats of the same pie, how much of the pie is eaten by both?

5. of a pie and of the same pie make how much of the pie?

ADDING HALVES, FOURTHS, AND EIGHTHS 61

6. Helen's mother bought three ducks for a Christmas dinner. One weighed 5 lb., one weighed 5 lb., and the third weighed 6 lb. Find the weight of all.

7. Helen's mother bought three fowls weighing respectively, 42 lb., 5 lb., and 41 lb. At 32¢ per pound, how much did they cost?

8. Ralph sold four hens weighing 51⁄2 lb., 61 lb., 57 lb., and 6 lb. Find the weight of all and how much he got for them at 36¢ per lb.

9. Fred raised four large pumpkins from one hill in his garden. One weighed 241⁄2 lb.; one weighed 225 lb.; one, 20 lb.; and the fourth weighed 17 lb. Find the total weight of the four.

ADDING THIRDS AND SIXTHS

1. If a pie is cut into 3 equal parts, what is each part of it called?

2. If cut into 6 equal parts, what is each part of it called? 3. One third of a pie will make how many sixths of it? Two thirds will make how many sixths?

4. How many sixths of the pie make one half of it?

[blocks in formation]

5. If you eat one third of a pie and your sister eats one sixth of it, together you both eat how much of it?

6. Ruth needed 14 yd. of ribbon for a sash and 3 yd. for a hair ribbon. For both she needed how much?
