THE STONE ARITHMETICS

These new books are the outgrowth of the recent advances made in the pedagogy of arithmetic. The researches and surveys of the past ten years have given us a new psychology of arithmetic, and have established laws of learning hitherto unknown. In organization and presentation these books follow the best established principles, and in content they contain the material now required by the most modern courses of study. Better than any others they make their appeal direct to the children.

CARDINAL FEATURES

1. The page and the general appearance.

2. Each new fact or process is presented through some concrete and vital situation of interest to children.

3. The books are written for children, and children can understand them even without the help of the teacher. This lightens the work of the teacher and develops self-reliance in her pupils.

4. The drills contain all of the facts that have been presented in the section upon which the drills are based. In the later drills the easier facts appear less often and the more difficult facts more often.

5. Motivation of drill work. Interest is secured in arithmetic itself through number races, time limits, and tests, instead of through situations that distract the attention from number.

6. Frequent achievement and diagnostic tests (called merely "tests" in the text). These tests will enable the
