indignation exclusively against the agents of such atrocities as are here recorded, forgetting that when they entered the naval or military service, they delivered up their consciences and freedom of action to their su periors, whose commands henceforward they were bound implicitly to obey. Let us, therefore, direct our indignation against the system itself, and exert all our moral influence to produce the same indignation in the public mind till war is expelled, as an occupation fit only for assassins and robbers, from every civilized and Christian country.

In hearty approval of such exhortation, we say-" AND LET ALL THE PEOPLE SAY -AMEN."

BY THE LINCOLN COUNTY CONFERENCE IN MAINE, at a Meeting begun August 20th, 1833, holden at the Meeting-house of the Rev. Mr. Kendrick in Edgcombe, were adopted the following:

Whereas, we consider the practice of war as inconsistent with the spirit, the principles, and the millenial triumphs of the Gospel; and whereas, we deeply deplore not only its enormous waste of life and treasure, but its baleful influence on individual and national character, on all the useful arts of peace, and the general welfare of the world: Therefore

Resolved, That we hail with much pleasure and hope, the formation of Societies to cherish and diffuse those principles of peace which the Gospel inculcates.

Resolved, That the Churches of this Conference be requested to observe some part of Christmas-day (Dec. 25th) as a concert of prayer for the prevalence of peace over the whole earth, especially for the blessing of God on the efforts of the American Peace Society; and that the Ministers be earnestly desired to preach on the subject to their people, at leas once a year, on or near the same time."*

*We are told that the General Association of Newhampshire have passed resolutions similar to these in the things specified, and unanimous in spirit with them. As yet, no copy has reached us.

The 16 gentlemen whose names are last mentioned, form the Piscataqua Association of (Congregational) Ministers, which thus, in July ult., acceded to the request of the American Peace Society. In the above list are enumerated 36 resident in one State. The whole number here given is 67. The full catalogue of Ministers of the Gospel who once a year or oftener, preach the doctrines of our religion concerning war, is 142.

Other clergymen who do likewise are requested to communicate the fact to us. Names of persons and places should be written plainly.

By a donation of $2,000 ladies of the First Parish in Dorchester, Massachusetts, have constituted the Rev. Thaddeus Mason, D. D., a Life Member of the American Peace Society.

[blocks in formation]

Hark! a cry among the nations!
"Come and let us seek the Lord,
Now, though long with rich oblations
We the War-God have ador'd,
Zion's King be God alone!

Bend we henceforth at His throne?

See! from every quarter flowing
Joyful crowds assemble round;
Love in every heart is glowing,
Praise is heard in every sound;
While Jehovah shows his face,
Glory fills the sacred place.

Weapons meant for mutual slaughter
Now are instruments of peace,
They who taste the living water

Learn from war's grim strife to cease:

Jesus reigns-the earth is still—

ALL THE NATIONS DO HIS WILL.

HYMN 2.-LOGAN.

Isaiah ii. 2.5.

Behold the mountain of the Lord,
In latter days shall rise
Above the mountains and the hills,
And draw the wondering eyes.

The beams that shine from Zion's hill
Shall lighten every land;

The King who reigns in Zion's towers
Shall all the world command.

No longer hosts, encountering hosts,
Their millions slain deplore;

They hang the trumpet in the hall,

And study war no more.

Come then-Oh, come from every land

To worship at his shrine;

And walking in the light of God,

With holy beauties shine.

*The time of "Greenville" may be used for this, carrying, in the fifth line the sound of the seventh syllable on through the eighth note.-Slight alterations have been made in both hymns.

"Defensive War Vindicated," and the communication that accompanied it, shall receive attention early.

The present number anticipates a month as to the time of publication: in issuing the next there will, of course, be an appearance of delay.
