PROBLEMS PRODUCING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS.

I. Let x=the y'ds silk; then 110-x-the y'ds cotton. 1. By supposition, 400-80X(110-x)-x2

2. By expanding, x=-40+/10000=-40+100

3. By uniting a 60, or 140; but as -140 is negative it is not applicable to goods which a man has in his possession; therefore x=60=the yards of silk, 110-x=110—60 =50=the yards of cotton.
