24 Car Jean n'avoit pas encore été mis en prison.

25 Or il y eut une dispute des disciples de Jean avec les Juifs, touchant le baptême.

26 Et ils vinrent à Jean, et lui dirent: Maître, celui qui étoit avec toi au-delà du Jourdain, auquel tu as rendu témoignage, le voilà qui baptise, et tous vont à lui.

27 Jean leur répondit: Personne ne peut rien recevoir, s'il ne lui a été donné du ciel.

28 Vous m'êtes vous-mêmes témoins que j'ai dit que ce n'est pas moi qui suis le Christ, mais que j'ai été envoyé devant lui.

29 Celui qui a l'épouse est l'époux; mais l'ami de l'époux, qui est présent, et qui l'écoute, est ravi de joie d'entendre la voix de l'époux; et c'est-là ma joie qui est parfaite.

30 Il faut qu'il croisse, et que je diminue.

31 Celui qui est venu d'en-haut est au-dessus de tous; celui qui est venu de la terre est de la terre, et parle comme étant de la terre ; celui qui est venu du ciel est audessus de tous.

32 Et il rend témoignage de ce qu'il a vu et entendu, mais personne ne reçoit son témoignage.

33 Celui qui a reçu son témoignage a scellé que Dieu est véritable.

22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

23 And John also was baptizing in Enon, near to Salim, because there was much water there; and they came, and were baptized: 24 For John was not yet cast into prison.

25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews, about purifying.

26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice; This my joy therefore is fulfilled.

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 He that cometh from above is above all he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

34 Car celui que Dieu a envoyé annonce les paroles de Dieu, parceque Dieu ne lui donne pas l'Esprit par mesure.

35 Le Père aime le Fils, et lui a donné toutes choses entre les mains.

36 Celui qui croit au Fils a la vie éternelle; mais celui qui ne croit pas au Fils ne verra point la vie, mais la colère de Dieu demeure sur lui.

34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

86 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

CHAP. IV.

Jésus-Christ s'entretient avec la Samaritaine; plusieurs croient en lui, comme aussi un seigneur dont il guérit le fils.

pris que les Pharisiens avoient ouï dire qu'il faisoit et baptisoit plus de disciples que Jean;

2 (Toutefois ce n'étoit pas Jésus lui-même qui baptisoit, mais c'étoient ses disciples.)

3 Il quitta la Judée, et s'en retourna en Galilée.

4 Or il falloit qu'il passât par la Samarie.

5 Il arriva donc à une ville de Samarie, nommée Sichar, qui est près de la possession que Jacob donna à Joseph son fils.

6 C'étoit-là qu'étoit le puits de Jacob. Jésus donc étant fatigué du chemin, s'assit près du puits; c'étoit environ la sixième heure du jour.

7 Une femme Samaritaine étant venue pour puiser de l'eau, Jésus lui dit: Donne-moi à boire.

8 Car ses disciples étoient allés à la ville, pour acheter des vivres.

9 Cette femme Samaritaine lui répondit: Comment toi, qui es Juif, me demandes-tu à boire, à

The woman of Samaria.

WHEN therefore the Lord

knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his his disciples,)

3 He left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.

4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well; and it was about the sixth hour.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest

10 Jésus répondit et lui dit: Si tu connoissois la grace que Dieu te fait, et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, tu lui en aurois demandé toimême, et il t'auroit donné une eau vive.

11 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond; d'où aurois-tu done cette eau vive?

12 Es-tu plus grand que Jacob notre père, qui nous a donné ce puits, et qui en a bu lui-même, aussi bien que ses enfans, et ses troupeaux?

13 Jésus lui répondit: Quiconque boit de cette eau aura encore soif;

14 Mais celui qui boira de l'eau que je lui donnerai, n'aura jamais soif; mais l'eau que je lui donnerai deviendra dans lui une source d'eau qui jaillira jusqu'à la vie éternelle.

15 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, donne-moi de cette eau, afin que je n'aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus ici pour en puiser.

16 Jésus lui dit: Va, appelle ton mari, et viens ici.

17 La femme répondit: Je n'ai point de mari. Jésus lui dit : Tu as fort bien dit: Je n'ai point de mari;

18 Car tu as eu cinq maris; et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; tu as dit vrai en cela.

19 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète.

20 Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne, et vous dites,

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, I thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living

water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst: but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

19 The, woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, That

21 Jésus lui dit: Femme, crois-moi; le tems vient, que vous n'adorerez plus le Père ni sur cette montagne, ni à Jérusalem.

22 Vous adorez ce que vous ne connoissez point; pour nous, nous adorons ce que nous connoissons; car le salut vient des Juifs.

23 Mais le tems vient, et il est déja venu, que les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité; car le Père demande de tels adorateurs.

24 Dieu est esprit; et il faut, que ceux qui l'adorent, l'adorent en esprit et en vérité.

25 Cette femme lui répondit : Je sais que le Messie (c'est-à-dire le Christ) doit venir; quand il sera venu, il nous annoncera toutes choses.

26 Jésus lui dit: Je le suis, moi, qui te parle.

27 Sur cela ses disciples arrivèrent, et ils furent surpris de ce qu'il parloit avec une femme; néanmoins aucun d'eux ne lui dit : Que lui demandes-tu? ou, pourquoi parles-tu avec elle?

28 La femme laissa donc sa cruche, et s'en alla à la ville, et dit aux gens du lieu:

29 Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait: ne seroit-ce point le Christ?

30 Ils sortirent donc de la ville, et vinrent vers lui.

31 Cependant ses disciples lui disoient, en l'en priant: Maître, mange.

32 Jésus leur dit: J'ai à manger d'une viande que vous ne connoissez pas.

33 Les disciples donc se disoient l'un à l'autre : Quelqu'un lui auroit-il apporté à manger?

in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, wor-, ship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit ard in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.

25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ.: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her water-pot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did: Is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

31 In the mean-while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master,

eat:

32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? U

34 Jésus leur dit: Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé, et d'accomplir son œuvre.

35 Ne dites-vous pas qu'il y a encore quatre mois jusqu'à la moisson? Mais moi je vous dis: Levez vos yeux, et regardez les campagnes, qui sont déja blanches et prêtes à être moissonnées.

36 Celui qui moissonne en reçoit la récompense, et amasse le fruit pour la vie éternelle; en sorte que celui qui sème et celui qui moissonne en ont ensemble de la joie.

37 Car en ceci ce qu'on dit est vrai: Que l'un sème, et que l'autre moissonne.

38 Je vous ai envoyés moissonner où vous n'avez pas travaillé; d'autres ont travaillé, et vous étes entrés dans leur travail.

39 Or plusieurs des Samaritains de cette ville-là crurent en lui, à cause de cette parole de la femme, qui avoit rendu ce témoignage: Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait.

40 Les Samaritains étant donc venus vers lui, le prièrent de demeurer chez eux; et il demeura là deux jours.

41 Et il y en eut beaucoup plus qui crurent en lui, après l'avoir entendu.

42 Et ils disoient à la femme: Ce n'est plus à cause de ce que tu nous as dit, que nous croyons; car nous l'avons entendu nousmêmes, et nous savons que c'est lui qui est véritablement le Christ, le Sauveur du monde.

43 Deux jours après il partit

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. 1

40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them; and he abode there two days.

41 And many more believed because of his own word;

42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying; for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
