39 Mais s'il vient de Dieu, Vous ne pouvez le détruire; et · prenez garde qu'il ne se trouve que vous ayez fait la guerre à Dieu Et ils furent de son avis.

40 Et ils firent rentrer les apôtres; et après les avoir fait fouetter, ils leur défendirent de parler au nom de Jésus; et ils les laissèrent aller.

41 Ils sortirent donc de devant le conseil, remplis de joie d'avoir été trouvés dignes de souffrir des opprobres pour le nom de Jésus.

42 Et ils ne cessoient tous les jours d'enseigner et d'annoncer Jésus-Christ, dans le temple, et de maison en maison.

39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach, and preach Jesus Christ.

N ce tems-là, comme les disciples se multiplioient, il s'éleva un murmure des Grecs contre les Hébreux, parceque leurs veuves étoient négligées dans la distribution qui se faisoit chaque jour.

2 C'est pourquoi les douze apôtres, ayant convoqué la multitude des disciples, leur dirent: Il n'est pas raisonnable que nous laissions la prédication de la parole de Dieu, pour servir aux tables.

3 Choisissez donc, frères, sept hommes d'entre vous, de qui l'on ait un bon témoignage, et qui soient pleins du Saint-Esprit et de sagesse, afin que nous leur commettions cet emploi.

4 Et pour nous, nous continuerons à vaquer à la prière, et au ministère de la parole.

Stephen accused of blasphemy.

AND in those days, when the

number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this busi

ness.

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

5 And the saying pleased the

- toute l'assemblée; et ils élurent Etienne, homme plein de foi et du Saint-Esprit, Philippe, Prochore, Nicanor, Timon, Parménas et Nicolas, prosélyte Antiochien;

6 Et ils les présentèrent aux apôtres, qui, après avoir prié, leur imposèrent les mains.

7 Et la parole de Dieu se répandoit, et le nombre des disciples se multiplioit fort à Jérusalem. Il y avoit même un grand nombre de sacrificateurs qui obéissoient à la foi.

8 Or Etienne, plein de foi et de force, faisoit de grands prodiges et de grands miracles parmi le peuple.

9 Mais quelques-uns de la synagogue, qu'on appelle la synagogue des affranchis, et de celle des Cyrénéens, des Alexandrins, et de ceux de Cilicie et d'Asie, s'élevèrent et disputoient contre Etienne.

10 Et ils ne pouvoient résister à la sagesse et à l'Esprit par lequel il parloit.

11 Alors ils subornèrent des hommes pour dire: Nous lui avons ouï proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu.

12 Et ils émurent le peuple, et les sénateurs, et les scribes; et se jetant sur lui, ils le saisirent par force, et l'emmenèrent au conseil ;

13 Et ils produisirent de faux témoins, qui disoient: Cet hommeci ne cesse de proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre ce saint lieu, et contre la loi.

14 Car nous lui avons ouï dire, que ce Jésus de Nazareth détruira ce lieu, et changera les ordonnances que Moïse nous a données.

whole multitude; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch:

6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles ders and miracles among the people.

9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia, and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law:

14 For we have heard him say, That this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

2 Et Etienne dit: Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez-moi. Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu'il étoit en Mesopotamie, avant qu'il demeurât à Carran ;

3 Et il lui dit: Sors de ton pays, et de ta parenté, et viens dans le pays que je te montrerai.

4 Alors étant sorti du pays des Caldéens, il vint demeurer à Carran. De-là, après que son père fut mort, Dieu le fit passer dans ce pays que vous habitez maintenant;

5 Où il ne lui donna aucun fonds, non pas même un pied de terre; mais il lui promit de lui en donner la possession, et à sa postérité après lui, lorsqu'il n'avoit point encore d'enfant.

6 Et Dieu lui parla ainsi : Ta postérité habitera dans une terre étrangère, pendant quatre cents ans; et on la réduira en servitude, et on la maltraitera.

7 Mais je jugerai la nation qui les aura asservis, dit le Seigneur; et après cela ils sortiront, et me serviront en ce lieu-ci.

2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

3 And said unto him, Get thée out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no not so much as to set his foot on yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

6 And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

7 And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they came forth, and serve me in this place.

11 Alors il arriva une famine dans tout le pays d'Egypte, et en Canaan, et une grande misère; en sorte que nos pères ne pouvoient trouver des vivres.

12 Mais Jacob ayant appris qu'il y avoit du bled en Egypte, y envoya nos pères, une première fois.

13 Et la seconde fois Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon sut quelle étoit l'extraction de Joseph.

14 Alors Joseph envoya quérir Jacob son père, et toute sa famille, qui consistoit en soixante et quinze personnes.

15 Jacob donc descendit en Egypte, et y mourut, lui et nos pères,

16 Qui furent transportés en Sichem, et mis dans le sépulcre qu'Abraham avoit acheté, à prix d'argent, des fils d'Hemor de Sichem.

17 Mais comme le tems approchoit, auquel devoit s'accomplir la promesse que Dieu avoit faite avec serment à Abraham, le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia beaucoup en Egypte ;

18 Jusqu'à ce qu'il vint un autre roi en Egypte, qui n'avoit point connu Joseph.

19 Ce roi, usant d'artifice contre

12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first."

13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

23 Mais quand il eut atteint l'âge de quarante ans, la pensée lui vint d'aller visiter ses frères, les enfans d'Israël.

24 Et voyant qu'on en maltraitoit un sans sujet, il prit sa défense, et vengea celui qui étoit outragé, en tuant l'Egyptien.

25 Or il croyoit que ses frères comprendroient que Dieu les vouloit délivrer par son moyen; mais ils ne le comprirent point.

26 Le lendemain il en vit quelques-uns d'eux qui se battoient, et il tâcha de les mettre d'accord, en leur disant: O hommes, vous êtes frères; pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous l'un l'autre ?

27 Mais celui qui maltraitoit son prochain repoussa Moïse, en lui disant: Qui t'a établi prince et juge sur nous ?

28 Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu tuas hier l'Egyptien?

29 A cette parole Moïse s'enfuit, et il demeura comme étranger au pays de Madian, où il eut deux fils.

30 Quarante ans après, l'ange du Seigneur lui apparut au désert de la montagne de Sina, dans la flamme d'un buisson qui étoit en feu.

31 Et quand Moïse le vit, il fut

20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.

24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them; but they understood not.

26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to ́another?

27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sina an angel of the Lord, in a flame of fire in a bush.
