2 Et Paul ayant été appelé, Tertulle commença à l'accuser, et il dit:

3 Très-excellent Félix! Nous reconnoissons en toutes rencontres, en tous lieux, et avec toute sorte d'actions de graces, que nous jouissons d'une grande paix par ton moyen, et par les réglemens que tu as établis pour ce peuple, selon ta prudence.

4 Mais pour ne pas t'arrêter plus long-tems, je te prie d'écouter, avec ton équité ordinaire, ce que nous avons à te dire, en peu

de mots.

5 C'est que nous avons trouvé cet homme, qui est une peste publique, qui excite des séditions parmi tous les Juifs, par tout le monde, et qui est le chef de la secte des Nazaréens.

6 Il a même attenté de profaner le temple; de sorte que nous l'avions saisi, et nous voulions le juger selon notre loi.

7 Mais le tribun Lysias étant survenu, nous l'ôta des mains avec grande violence.

8 Ordonnant que ses accusateurs vinssent devant toi. Tu pourras, en en prenant information, savoir de lui la vérité de toutes les choses dont nous l'accusons.

9 Ce que les Juifs confirmèrent, en disant, que les choses étoient ainsi.

10 Mais Paul, après que le gouverneur lui eut fait signe de parler, répondit: Sachant que tu es juge de cette nation depuis plusieurs années, je parle pour ma défense avec plus de confiance.

2 And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying,

3 Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unta this nation by thy providence, We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

4 Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.

5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

6 Who also hath gone about to profane the temple whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.

7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,

8 Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom, thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things whereof we accuse him.

11 Tu peux savoir qu'il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer Dieu.

12 Ils ne m'ont point trouvé disputant avec personne dans le temple, ni attroupant le peuple dans les synagogues, ou dans la ville.

13 Et ils ne sauroient prouver les choses dont ils m'accusent maintenant.

14 Orje t'avoue bien ceci, que conformément à la voie qu'ils appellent secte, je.sers le Dieu de mes pères, croyant tout ce qui est écrit dans la loi et dans les prophètes ;

15 Ayant cette espérance en Dieu, que la résurrection des morts, tant des justes que des injustes, qu'ils attendent aussi eux-mêmes, arrivera.

16 C'est pourquoi aussi je travaille à avoir toujours la conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

17 Or après plusieurs années d'absence, je suis venu pour faire des aumônes à ma nation et pour présenter des offrandes.

18 Et comme je vaquois à cela, certains juifs d'Asie m'ont trouvé purifié dans le temple, sans attroupement et sans tumulte.

19 Ils devoient eux-mêmes comparoître devant toi et m'accuser, s'ils avoient quelque chose à dire contre moi.

20 Mais que ceux-ci même déclarent, s'ils m'ont trouvé coupable de quelque chose, lorsque j'ai paru devant le conseil.

21 A moins que ce ne soit de cette seule parole, que j'ai dite hautement, étant au milieu d'eux: Je suis aujourd'hui tiré en cause pour la résurrection des morts.

11 Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.

12 And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city;

13 Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse

me.

14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets;

15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God 1 and toward men.

17 Now after many years, I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

18 Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult :

19 Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.

20 Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council;

21 Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead, I am called in question by you this day.

22 Félix ayant ouï cela, les remit à une autre fois, en disant: Après que je me serai plus exactement informé de cette secte, et que le tribun Lysias sera descendu, je prendrai connoissance de votre affaire.

23 Et il commanda à un centenier de garder Paul, mais en le tenant moins resserré, et sans empêcher aucun des siens de le servir ou de le visiter.

24 Quelques jours après, Félix vint avec Drusille sa femme, qui étoit Juive, et il envoya quérir Paul, et il l'entendit parler de la foi en Jesus Christ.

25 Et comme Paul parloit de la justice, de la continence, et du jugement à venir, Félix effrayé, lui dit: Va-t'en pour cette fois, et quand j'aurai la commodité, je te rappellerai.

26 Il espéroit aussi que Paul lui donneroit de l'argent, afin qu'il le mît en liberté; c'est pourquoi il l'envoyoit quérir souvent, et s'entretenoit avec lui.

27 Deux ans s'étant passés, Félix eut pour successeur Portius Festus; et voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, il laissa Paul en prison.

22 And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your

matter.

23 And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.

24 And after certain days when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.

25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

26 He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him. 27 But after two years, Porcius Festus came into Felix's room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

2 Et le souverain sacrificateur, et les premiers d'entre les Juifs, comparurent devant lui contre Paul;

into the province, after three days he ascended from Cesarea to Jerusalem.

2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

comme une grace, qu'il le fît venir à Jérusalem, lui ayant dressé des embûches pour le tuer en chemin.

4 Mais Festus répondit, que Paul étoit bien gardé à Césarée, et qu'il devoit y aller bientôt lui-même.

5 Que ceux donc d'entre vous, dit-il, qui le peuvent faire, y descendent avec moi, et si cet homme a commis quelque crime, qu'ils l'accusent.

6 Festus n'ayant demeuré parmi eux que dix jours, il descendit à Césarée; et le lendemain, étant assis sur le tribunal, il commanda qu'on amenât Paul.

7 Quand on l'eut amené, les. Juifs qui étoient descendus de Jérusalem, se mirent autour du tribunal, chargeant Paul de plusieurs grands crimes, qu'ils ne pouvoient prouver.

8 Paul disoit pour sa défense: Je n'ai rien fait, ni contre la loi des Juifs, ni contre le temple, ni contre Cé

sar.

9 Mais Festus, voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, répondit à Paul, et lui dit: Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem, et y être jugé sur ces choses devant moi?

10 Et Paul dit: Je comparois devant le tribunal de César, où il faut que je sois jugé; je n'ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, comme tu le sais bien.

11 Que si je leur ai fait quelque tort, ou si j'ai commis quelque crime digne de mort, je ne refuse pas de mourir; mais s'il n'est rien des choses dont ils m'accusent, personne ne peut me livrer à eux: J'en appelle à César.

12 Alors Festus, après en avoir

4 But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.

5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment-seat, commanded Paul to be brought.

7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem, stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.

8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cesar, have I offended any thing at all.

9 But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?

10 Then said Paul, I stand at Cesar's judgment-seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal into Cesar.

12 Then Festus, when he had

conféré avec son conseil, répondit: Tu en as appelé à César, tu iras à César.

13 Quelques jours après, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée, pour saluer Festus.

14 Et comme ils y demeurèrent plusieurs jours, Festus informa le roi de l'affaire de Paul, en lui disant: Il y a ici un homme que Félix a laissé prisonnier.

15 Les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens des Juifs le vinrent accuser devant moi, lorsque j'étois à Jérusalem, demandant sa condamnation.

16 Mais je leur répondis que ce n'étoit pas la coutume des Romains de livrer qui que ce soit, pour le faire mourir, avant que celui qui est accusé ait ses accusateurs présens, et qu'il ait la liberté de se justifier du crime dont on l'accuse.

17 Après donc qu'ils furent venus ici, je m'assis sans aucun délai, dès le lendemain, sur le tribunal, et je commandai qu'on amenât cet homme.

18 Ses accusateurs étoient présens; mais ils n'alléguèrent aucun des crimes dont je pensois qu'ils l'accuseroient.

19 Ils avoient seulement quelques disputes avec lui, touchant leur superstition, et touchant un certain Jésus mort, que Paul assuroit être vivant.

20 Ne sachant donc que prononcer sur cela, je lui demandai s'il vouloit aller à Jérusalem, et être jugé sur ces choses.

21 Mais Paul en ayant appelé, et demandant que sa cause fût réservée à la connoissance de l'empereur, j'ai ordonné qu'on le gardât jusqu'à ce que je l'envoyasse à César.

conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cesar? unto Cesar shalt thou go.

13 And after certain days," king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cesarea, to salute Festus.

14 And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:

15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.

16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against

him.

17 Therefore when they were come hither, without any delay, on the morrow I sat on the judgment-seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.

18 Against whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:

19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerúsalem, and there be judged of

these matters.

21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cesar.
