27 Et il n'y a plus rien à attendre qu'un jugement terrible et un feu ardent, qui doit dévorer les adversaires.

28 Si quelqu'un avoit violé la loi de Moïse, il mouroit sans miséricorde, sur le témoignage de deux ou trois personnes.

29 Combien plus grand croyezvous que doive être le supplice dont sera jugé digne celui qui aura foulé aux pieds le Fils de Dieu, et tenu pour une chose profane le sang de l'alliance, par lequel il avoit été sanctifié, et qui aura outragé l'Esprit de la grace?

30 Car nous connoissons celui qui a dit: C'est à moi qu'appartient la vengeance; je le rendrai, dit le Seigneur. Et ailleurs: Le Seigneur jugera son peuple.

31 C'est une chose terrible que de tomber entre les mains du Dieu

vivant.

32 Rappelez dans votre mémoire les premiers tems, auxquels, après avoir été éclairés, vous avez soutenu un grand combat de souffrances;

33 Quand d'un côté vous avez été exposés, à la vue de tout le monde, à des opprobres et à des persécutions; et que de l'autre vous avez pris part aux maux de ceux qui étoient ainsi traités.

34 Car vous avez aussi compati à mes liens, et vous avez souffert avec joie qu'on vous ravît vos biens; sachant que vous en avez dans les cieux de plus excellens, et qui sont permanens.

35 N'abandonnez donc pas votre confiance, qui doit avoir une si grande récompense.

36 Car vous avez besoin de patience, afin qu'après avoir fait la volonté de Dieu, vous remportiez l'effet de sa promesse.

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment, and fiery indignation which shall devour the adversaries.

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses :

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazing stock, both by reproaches and afflictions: and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience; that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
