RULE OF THREE INVERSE.

To what questions does the Rule of Three Inverse relate ? A. Questions in which more requires less, and less requires

more.

When does more require less? A. When the third term is more than the first, and requires the fourth term or answer to be less than the second.

When does less require more? A. When the third term is less than the first, and requires the fourth to be more than the second.

RULE.-How do you state the sums? A. As in the Rule of Three Direct.

Which terms do you multiply together? A. The first and second.

What term do you divide by? A. The third.

In what denomination will your answer come out? A. In the same that the middle term was brought into.

Note. As questions in practice may be easily solved by the Rule of Three, it being only a contraction of that rule when the first term happens to be an unit, or one; and, as reckoning in Federal Money has rendered it almost useless, it will be omitted as it has been by many other writers.

INTEREST.

What is the allowance, paid by the borrower to the lender, for the use of money, called? A. Interest.

How many kinds are there? A. Two.

What are they? A. Simple and Compound.

What is Simple Interest? A. That interest which is allowed for the principal only.

At what rate per cent. is it generally reckoned? A. 6 per cent. per annum.

How is this per cent. fixed in most of the United States ? A. By law.

What is the meaning of 6 per cent. per annum? A. Six dollars for the use of $100, or £6 for the use of £100 for one year, &c.

What is the meaning of per annum ? A. For a year. What is the interest, which is established by law called? A. Legal interest.

Suppose there is no rate per cent. mentioned; what per ct. is always to be understood? A. The rate per cent. established by law.

What is that in our own state? A. 6 per cent.

How many things are to be noticed in interest? A. Three.
What are they? A. Principal, rate and amount.
What is the principal? A. The sum lent.

What is the rate? A. The sum per cent. agreed on.

What is the amount? A. The Principal and Interest added together.

CASE I.

To find the interest of any sum, whether dollars, eagles guineas, pounds, or shillings, &c. at 6 per cent. for one year

or more.

What is the RULE? A. Multiply by 1 half the number of months, and divide by 100, or cut off two figures.

What are the figures cut off? A. Cents, mills, &c. (i. e.) decimals.

Remark. The instructor will continue to bear in mind that the slate is not to be used in obtaining the answers to the questions given for mental exercise. What is the interest of 40 dollars for one year? A. 2 dols. 40 cts. What is the amount ? A. 42 dols. 40 cts.

As a difficulty arises in directing the scholar to multiply by one half the number of months; when the sum consists of years, months, and days, together: the following table is composed, by putting 30 under the given number of days,-reducing the fraction to its lowest terms, and a rule subjoined, by which the interest for any number of days may be found readily with fewer figures than by any other method.
