Hence the propriety of the following RULE. Then add Write units under units, tens under tens, &c. upwards the units, and if the amount be less than ten, set it down. If the amount be ten or more, write down the unit figure, and carry the tens to be added with the columns of tens. Proceed in this way, till the whole is finished, writing down the total amount in the last column. PROOF. Begin at the top, and add together all the columns of numbers downwards, in the same manner as they were before added upwards; then if the two sums agree, the work is right. Ans. 3449. 22.
