HONORABLE SENATE,

JUNE SESSION, 1846.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 1846.

THIS being the day prescribed by the Constitution for the Legislature of the state of New-Hampshire to assemble, the following named persons, elected Senators, appearing, took and subscribed the oaths of office, agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution, viz:

From District No. 1, Hon. GEORGE H. DODGE.

The Senate was called to order by the clerk of last year.

On motion of Mr. Patten, Hon. HARRY HIBBARD was chosen chairman, to preside until a President shall be chosen.

The Secretary of the State brought in and laid before the Senators present the returns of votes given in March last for Senators in the several Senatorial Districts in this State, with the following communication:

Mr. Chairman-From an examination of the votes returned as being given in the several Senatorial Districts in this State, made by the Governor and Council, it appears that there has been no choice of Senators in the following Districts :-Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11.

The return of votes from the towns of Danville and New-Market, in District No. 2; New-Durham and Ossipee, in District No. 6; Dame's Gore, in District No 11; and from the towns of Chatham and Hart's Location, in District No. 12, were not received at the Secretary of State's office in season to be counted by the Governor and Council. I therefore lay before the Senators elected the return of votes given in the several Senatorial Districts of this State on the 10th of March, 1846. THOMAS P. TREADWELL, Secretary of State.

A message from the House of Representatives was received by Messrs. Clark, Sanborn and Garfield, as follows:

The House of Representatives give information that they have organized by choosing Hon. JOHN P. HALE Speaker, THOMAS J. HARRIS Clerk, and CYRUS K. SANBORN Assistant Clerk, and are ready to proceed to the business of the session.

On motion of Mr. Patten, the clerk was directed to inform the House of Representatives that five members elected to the Senate have convened and are qualified; that they have chosen a Chairman, but not being a quorum of the Senate they have not chosen their constitutional officers. But having been informed by the Secretary of State that there has been no choice of Senators in Districts Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11, they are ready to meet the House in convention at such time as the House may designate, for the purpose of filling the vacancies in the Senate, agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution.

Information was given accordingly.

A message from the House of Representatives, by their Clerk:

Mr. Chairman :-I am directed to inform the Hon. Senators, that the House of Representatives are now ready to meet the honorable Senators in Convention, for the purpose of proceeding in the elections agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution.

On motion of Mr. Patten, the Senators present proceeded to the

Hall of the House of Representatives and met the House in convention, for the purpose of proceeding in the elections agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution.

IN CONVENTION.

The Secretary of the State came in and read to the Convention the record of the returns of votes for Senators, as given in March last, and returned to the Secretary's office; by which it appeared that no choice had been made in districts numbered 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11.

On motion of Mr. Sawyer, of Dover, the convention proceeded to fill the vacancy in District No. 3; Noyes Poor and James U. Parker being the two highest candidates.

and is elected.

On motion of Mr. Peabody, of Sullivan, the Convention proceeded to fill the vacancy in District No. 5; the two highest candidates being William W. Rollins and James Drake.

On motion of Mr. Wilson, of Keene, the Convention proceeded to fill the vacancy in District No. 6; the two highest candidates being Charles Lane and Artemas Harmon.

Mr. McGaw moved that the Convention rise, which was decided in the negative.

On motion of Mr. H. Foster, of Manchester, the Convention proceeded to fill the vacancy in District No. 7; the two highest candidates being Timothy Abbott and Jonas Hutchinson.

Jonas Hutchinson had Timothy Abbott had and is elected.

Mr. James, of Deerfield, moved that the Convention rise, which was decided in the affirmative.

The Senators returned to their Chamber.

On motion of Mr. Patten, the Senators adjourned to 3 o'clock, P. M.

Three o'clock in the afternoon.

The Senators elect met according to adjournment.

A message from the House of Representatives, by their clerk. Mr. Chairman:-The House of Representatives are ready to meet the Honorable Senators in convention, for the purpose of proceeding in the elections, agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution.

On motion of Mr. Patten, the Senators met the House of Representatives in Convention, for the purpose of proceeding in the elections agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution.

IN CONVENTION.

On motion of Mr. Kenrick, of Lebanon, the Convention proceeded to fill the vacancy in Senatorial District Number 9; the two highest candidates being Samuel Dinsmoor and Nathaniel Kingsbury. Whole number of votes cast,

and is elected.

On motion of Mr. Garfield, of the House, the Convention proceeded to fill the vacancy in District Number 11; the two highest candidates being Sylvanus Hewes and Irenus Hamilton.

and is elected.

Mr. Clark, of Manchester, offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That a committee be appointed by the Convention to notify the Senators elected to fill the vacancies, of their election, and request their immediate attendance, to complete the organization of the government; which was adopted.

Ordered, That said committee consist of Mr. Patten, of the Senate, and Messrs. Clark, of Manchester, and Fogg, of Gilmanton, of the House.

The Secretary of the State then laid before the Convention the returns of votes, or what purports to be the returns of votes, from the several towns and places in this state, given in March last for Governor and for Counsellors.

Mr. Sawyer, of Dover, offered the following resolution :

Resolved, That the returns of votes for Governor be referred to a select committee, to examine the same, cast their numbers, and report thereon.

On motion of Mr. Clark, of Manchester,

Ordered, That said resolution lie on the table.

On motion of Mr. Sawyer, of Dover, the Convention rose and the Senators returned to their chamber.

On motion of Mr. Dodge, the Senators adjourned till to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock.

THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 1846.

Hon. Asa Page, Senator elect from Senatorial District No. 10, appearing, was duly qualified and took his seat.

A message from the House of Representatives, by their clerk: Mr. Chairman:-The House of Representatives are ready to meet the Hon. Senators in convention, for the purpose of proceeding in the elections, agreeably to the constitution.

On motion of Mr. Dodge, the Senators accordingly met the House

IN CONVENTION.

On motion of Mr. Emery, of Portsmouth, the following persons were appointed a committee to inform His Excellency the Governor of the election of those persons as Senators who were elected yesterday by the Convention, viz: Mr. Dodge, Senator, and Messrs. Wilson and Swazey, of the House.

On motion of Mr. Clark, of Manchester, the Convention rose and the Senators returned to their chamber.

On motion of Mr. Emerson, the Senators adjourned till 3 o'clock this afternoon.

AFTERNOON.

The Senators elect met according to adjournment.
