COUNTY OFFICERS.

Sheriffs, Registers of Deeds and County Treasurers, are elected by the people of the several Counties for terms of three years. The current triennial term of Sheriffs expires on the first Wednesday of January, 1860, and that of Registers of Deeds and County Treasurers in January, 1862.

Registers of Probate and Insolvency, and Clerks of Courts, are elected for terms of five years. The current term of the former expires in January, 1864; that of the latter in 1862.

Sheriffs, Registers of Deeds and Clerks of Courts, are paid by fees. County Treasurers are allowed a percentage on certain moneys disbursed by them, in addition to such compensation as the Commissioners of their respective Counties may fix.

County Commissioners are elected one annually, and severally for terms of three years; and two Special Commissioners are elected every third year, the current term ending in December, 1859. They are severally entitled to receive one dollar for every ten miles actually travelled by them, and three dollars per day for the time employed in discharging their official duties.

By the provisions of chapter 138, Acts of 1858, the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Council, is required to designate and commission a certain number of Justices of the Peace in the several Counties to try criminal cases. No Justice of the Peace not thus designated and commissioned has any power or authority in criminal cases, except to receive complaints and issue warrants, for which no fees are to be allowed.
