PREFACE.

MANY years have elapsed since this little work was finished, which is now offered for the use of those who, in the fulfilment of their duties, take the Word of God to the dwellings of the poor.

It was begun for private use, without any intention of publication; but, when completed, the thought occurred that as "mind answers to mind," so the inability felt by the compiler readily to refer to, or apply well-known passages of Scripture suitable to the want of the moment, might be felt by others also among the many who are working as Sunday-school teachers, or visiting among the poor; and with this thought arose the hope that this little compilation might be useful, not in taking the place of the Bible, but in helping those who have not much time for study to search it for themselves, the references given under each heading affording help for deeper searching and comparing of the Word of God.

Want of space, and the desire to keep only one subject before the mind at one time, obliged many of the verses to
