93. An exhortation to universal praise. L. M.
1 FROM all that dwell below the skies Let the Creator's praise arise; Let the Redeemer's name be sung, Through every land, by every tongue.
2 Eternal are thy mercies, Lord, And truth eternal is thy word;
Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more.
3 In every land begin the song; To every land the strains belong; In cheerful sounds all voices raise, And let the world be fill'd with praise.
The excellency of the Scriptures.
1 FATHER of Mercies! in thy word What endless riches shine! For ever be thy name ador'd For knowledge thus divine!
2 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice Spreads heavenly peace around; And life and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.
3 O may those heavenly pages be Our first, our chief delight! And still new beauties may we see, And still increase in light.
4 Divine Instructor! glorious Lord! Be Thou for ever near: Teach us to love thy sacred Word, And view our Saviour there.
95. Exhortation to universal praise. Ps. 148. (4. 8. & 4.7.)
1 PRAISE the Lord! ye heavens, adore Him, Praise Him, angels in the height; Sun and moon, rejoice before Him; Praise Him, all ye stars and light: Praise the Lord! for He hath spoken, Worlds His mighty voice obey'd; Laws, that never shall be broken,
For their guidance He hath made.
2 Praise the Lord! for He is glorious; Never shall His promise fail;
God hath made His saints victorious; Sin and death shall not prevail : Praise the God of our salvation, Hosts on high His power proclaim, Heaven, and earth, and all creation, Laud and magnify His name.
1 SALVATION is for ever nigh
To those who fear and trust the Lord : And grace, descending from on high, Fresh hopes of glory shall afford.
2 Mercy and truth on earth are met,
Since Christ the Lord came down from heaven:
By His obedience, full, complete, Justice is pleas'd, and peace is given.
3 Now truth and honour shall abound, Religion dwell on earth again; And heavenly influence bless the ground, In our Redeemer's gentle reign.
4 Pure righteousness shall spread her wing, And to this lower earth descend: Prepare thy way, Eternal King!
And all thy children's steps attend.
97. Review of life, crowned with mercies.
1 WHEN all thy mercies, O my God! My rising soul surveys, Transported with the view, I'm lost In wonder, love, and praise.
2 O how shall words, with equal warmth, The gratitude declare,
That glows within my swelling heart? But thou canst read it there.
3 Thy providence my life sustain'd, And all my wants redress'd, When in the silent womb I lay, And hung upon the breast.
4 Unnumber'd comforts to my Thy tender care bestow'd,
Before my infant heart conceiv'd
From whom those comforts flow'd.
5 When, in the slippery paths of youth, With heedless steps I ran, Thy arm, unseen, convey'd me safe, And led me up to man.
6 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts, My daily thanks employ; Nor is the least a cheerful heart, That tastes those gifts with joy.
7 Through every period of my life Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And, after death, in distant worlds, The glorious theme renew.
98. The Lord the Shepherd of His people. (6.8.)
1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare, And feed me with a shepherd's care; His presence shall my wants supply, And guard me with a watchful eye: My noon-day walks He shall attend, And all my midnight hours defend.
2 When in the sultry glebe I faint, Or on the thirsty mountains pant, To fertile vales and dewy meads My weary wand'ring steps He leads, Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow, Amid the verdant landscape flow.
3 Though in a bare and rugged way, Through devious lonely wilds I stray, Thy bounty shall my pains beguile; The barren wilderness shall smile, With sudden greens and herbage crown'd, And streams shall murmur all around.
4 Though in the paths of death I tread, With gloomy horrors overspread, My steadfast heart shall fear no ill, For Thou, O Lord, art with me still; Thy friendly crook shall give me aid, And guide me through the dreadful shade.
