RECOMMENDATIONS.

THE subscribers, having perused the "COLUMBIAN ARITHMETICIAN," are of opinion that it contains many valuable improvements in the science of which it treats; particularly in Fractions, Proportion, Exchange, and the Extraction of Roots. We think it will be highly useful to the community in general, and particularly beneficial in schlo.is. ISAAC HACKER. WILLIAM B. DODGE. JOHN GRAY. ASA FLANDERS.

THE subscribers, having examined in manuscript, the COLUMBIAN ARITHMETICIAN, approve of the general plan; and think the author entitled to credit for much ingenuity, originality and improvement, in various parts of his work. We think the Book well calculated for the use of schools, and to promote the general knowledge of Arithmetic-And we sincerely wish the author that liberal patronage, to which his talents, as a mathematician, justly entitle him.

HAVING inspected a new system of Arithmetic entitled the COLUMBIAN ARITHMETICIAN-I am fully satisfied, that it is better calculated than any I have seen, to subserve the instruction of youth, as well as the interest of the merchant and the man of business. In the new method of introducing the knowledge of Fractions, and of Extracting Roots; and in the frequent exemplifications of the science of Geometry, are many ingenious and useful improvements. I sincerely wish that the industry and talents of the author may find ample reward. by meeting with general patronage and encouragement. Beverly, August 23, 1810.

DEAR SIR,

ISAAC FLAGG.

I RECEIVED pleasure in perusing the COLUMBIAN ARITHMETICIAN, and must sincerely wish you success in the publication, from a conviction that it is calculated to subserve the interest of our youth. Among the numerous productions of the kind, I am induced to consid. er it as entitled to a respectable rank. The arrangement-the application of its rules to practical use, and the great correctness in performing the operations, recommend it to notice. PETER EATON.

With esteem I am, &c.
