It also contains a translation of the Rental of Dartford Priory made 27 Henry VII. by order of Dame Elizabeth Cressener, a most invaluable document hitherto inaccessible to antiquaries.

And copies or large extracts from the Wills of persons resident in the neighbourhood. registered in the first eleven volumes of the Archives of the see at Rochester, from 1440 to the close of the 16th century, containing references to curious subjects of which all tradition has perished, relative to parishes around Dartford, elucidating the descent of property and families; and showing with what statues of Saints, Altars and Lights the piety of individuals decorated their parochial Churches and Chapels, and what masses should be celebrated for the repose of the testator's and all christian souls-the name of the priest selected to sing the offices-and the sum to be paid for the performance. They also show how these practices prevailed until the alteration of religion by Henry the Eighth. The Wills made and registered in the reigns of Edward VI. Queen Mary, and until the final establishment of the protestant faith to

wards the end of the century, convey the most vivid protraiture of the troubled state of men's minds in matters of religion; the majority evidently attached to the ancient faith, seeking by sundry unusual devices, to secure provision for the weal of their departed spirits, without by a breach of law invalidating their Testaments; whilst others animated by zeal for the progress of the reformation are half afraid to make it manifest, lest another religious revolution should brand them heretics.-The Wills also show what ceremonies prevailed, and what doles were given at the times of interment--and in the absence of all monumental evidence and family tradition, frequently specify in what part of the church or cemetery the body of the testator was laid, and the reason which made him select the spot. The volume also contains a vast mass of traditionarv anecdotes relative to individuals formerly existing in the town and neighbourhood. Dr. John Latham's MS., Collections, &c.

The following Works are also by the same Author, two portraits of whom have lately been engraved, one a Medallion, and the other from a Photographic Drawing, To enable Collectors to illustrate his works, some of cach have been printed in folio, octavo and quarto, respectively 5s., 3s., and Is.
