Report of Proceedings

OF THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE GEORGIA BAR ASSOCIATION HELD AT THE WIGWAM, INDIAN SPRING, GEORGIA, MAY 28TH AND 29TH, 1908.

MORNING SESSION-MAY 28, 1908.

The twenty-fifth annual session of the Georgia Bar Association convened at the Wigwam, Indian Spring, Georgia, at 11:00 A.M., and was called to order by the President, Judge Samuel B. Adams, of Savannah.

The President: The twenty-fifth annual session of the Georgia Bar Association now convenes. The meeting will please come to order. The first matter to be submitted is the report of the Executive Committee, to which you will now listen the report of the Executive Committee by Mr. J. H. Merrill, of Thomasville, Chairman.

Mr. J. H. Merrill (Thomasville): The Executive Committee has elected the following new members since the last meeting of the Association:

[blocks in formation]

The program that we have arranged for this morning is as follows: The Treasurer's Report; the President's Address; the report of the Committee appointed at the last meeting to prepare the memorial of Judge Bleckley, this will be presented by Judge Lamar; the report of the Committee on Ethics; and the report of the Committee on Legislation. We have arranged the time, and will expect discussion on all the Committee reports, as well as of the special topics that have been assigned. For the afternoon we will have the papers on the first subject— "How Far Should Public Utility Corporations Be Controlled, and by What Means;" after that, the Committee's report on Jurisprudence, Law Reform and Procedure.

The Treasurer's report is first in order.

The President: We will now have the Treasure's report. Mr. Z. D. Harrison (Atlanta): The Executive Committee with due care and diligence has considered the state of the treasury; it has inspected the vouchers of the Treasurer, and it has examined and approved his report. That report shows that there was a balance on May 29, 1907, of $1,236.12 in the treasury; that since that date dues have been collected to the amount of $1,925.00. The disbursements of the Treasurer during the current year have amounted to $3,161.12, less $1,519.65. There is a balance in the treasury to-day of $1,519.65, which balances the receipts of the Treasurer during the current year.

It may be desirable that the Association should be informed also of the fact that there are 110 members of the Association now indebted on account of dues $770.00. That completes the report, Mr. President.

(For the report of the Treasurer in detail see Appendix A.) The President: The next number on the program, gentlemen, is the annual address of the President.

(For the President's address see Appendix B.)

Mr. Alex W. Smith (Atlanta): I believe it is customary, before taking up the regular order of exercises, at each of our meetings that steps be taken for the creation of a Nominating Committee for the purpose of nominating our officers for the ensuing year. This is done in order that the presiding officer
