Area = length breadth (Art. 333). Hence, if the area in square rods is divided by either factor in rods, the quotient will be the other factor in rods.

Capacity = length × breadth × depth (Art. 339). Hence, if the capacity in cubic feet is divided by the product of two of the factors in feet, the quotient will be the other factor in feet.

83. The horizontal section of a rectangular cistern being 15 sq. ft., how deep must it be to have a capacity of 6 cubic yards?

Reduction of Denominate Fractions.

373. A Common Fraction or a Decimal is called Denominate when it is used in connection with a denomination; as, lb., .9 of a mile.

374. A denominate fraction, whether common or decimal, is reduced, like an integer, to a lower denomination by multiplication, to a higher denomination by division.

Ex. 1.-Reduce £

to the common fraction, and £.0003 to the decimal, of a farthing.

Multiplying by 20 reduces pounds to shillings (Art. 366), multiplying by 12 reduces shillings to pence, multiplying by 4 reduces pence to farthings. Hence,

Prove by reducing the results back to the common fraction and decimal of a pound, as in Ex. 2.
