PREFACE

TO THE ENGLISH EDITION.

THE following review takes for granted a familiarity with facts which an English reader may not possess. In the United States there are five or six newspapers and other periodicals devoted to the cause of Spiritualism, as it is called, besides a large number of cheap pamphlets and books. By means of these the facts are within every man's reach, and I did not feel it necessary to occupy space in detailing them. In England the case is different; and I propose, therefore, in this preface, to give specimens of the facts referred to in the review. I will only remark that the
