WEST INDIES AND BRITISH POSSESSIONS IN AMERICA.

Accounts are kept, as in Britain and Ireland, in pounds, shillings and pence, but on account of the scarcity of coins; and the use of paper-money instead of them, are of much smaller value than pounds British.

Exchanges are made similar to that between Great Britain and Ireland, but the course of exchange is from 40 to 80 per cent, in favour of Britain, London giving the certain, and America the variable price.

ARBITRATION OF EXCHANGE.

Arbitration of Exchange is a method of finding a proportionate rate of exchange between any two places, or of valuing any

sum of the money of one place in that of another, when the course or courses of exchange between two or more places, is or are given.

By comparing the par of exchange thus found, with the present course of exchange, a person is enabled to find which way to draw bills or remit them to the most advantage.-Questions of this kind are performed by the Rule of Proportion. Arbitration of exchanges are simple or compound.

Simple Arbitration is when the exchange between two or three places only are considered.

116. When the exchange between England and Ireland is 84 per cent, and between England and Amsterdam at 36s. 3d. Flemish, per pound sterling; what is the arbitrated course of exchange between Ireland and Amsterdam?

COMPOUND ARBITRATION.

Compound Arbitration is when the exchange between four or more places is considered.

Questions of this kind are performed by one analogy or more in the Rule of Proportion, but when more than 3 places are
