To read any number expressed in figures.

Divide the given number into periods and half periods, as before directed.

To the simple value of each significant figure, join the name of its place according to its local value in the series, and conclude every period, except that of units, by its proper name or title, as millions, billions &c.

ADDITION is the gathering of several numbers into one sum or number, which is called the total; which shall be equal to the sum of the given numbers. This character + Plus, denotes addition, and shows that the numbers between which it is placed are to be added together. thus 5 + 2 + 6, signifies that to the number 5, we are to add the number 2, and to their sum add six, which make in all 13. An integer, or whole number, consists of one or more units, of only one kind or denomination : such as have no particular name assigned to them, are sometimes called abstract numbers, thus 5 and l are evidently the one five times greater than the other, abstractedly considered, but five inches are also evidently less than one yard, therefore integers of different names cannot be collected into one sum, until one is made of the like name to the other. To add numbers of the same name or denomination observe the following JoJ. Alois Place the numbers under each other, so that units may be under units, and tens under tens, &c. Add up each column of figures separately, beginning at the column of units, write down under each column the right hand figure or cipher of its sum, and carry the other figure or figures, if any, to the next column, thus proceed column after column to the last, putting down the total sum thereof.

The same result may be had, by taking the sums of the columns in any other order, and thus the truth of the work may be proved. s

The rule of Addition is founded on this simple axiom, viz. that the whole is equal to the sum of its parts.

If the learner commits to memory the following TABLE it will facilitate the operation of Addition.
