Band Clutches.-Band clutches have been used to a limi extent in automobile construction, though these have never recei the wide application that the cone, three plate and multiple c clutches have. Many early models of Packard and Peerless a mobiles used an internal expanding band clutch faced with leat Means of adjustment was provided by which the degree of pansion relative to the movement of the expanding toggle link could be varied to some extent. worn or soaked with oil it was much more apt to slip than a cone elutch, so as soon as the leather facing had worn slightly and the adjustment had reached its limit, it was necessary to reface the band. This was done in the same manner as advised for replacement of worn cone clutch frictions, though more care is needed in truing off the face of the leather.
