MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, STEAM ENGINEERING, 3-VF ENTERED ACCORDING TO THE ACT OF Congress, IN THE YEAR 1897, BY THE COLLIERY ENGINEER CO., IN THE OFFICE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS, AT WASHINGTON. BURR PRINTING HOUSE, NEW YORK. 28 X 200 66 PREFACE TO THIRD EDITION. It is with feelings of great satisfaction that we once more announce a new edition of the 'Mechanics' Pocket Memoranda." One of the principal advantages of our pocket-book has been its small size, thus making it a pocket-book in reality instead of in name only. This feature has been retained in the present edition. Notwithstanding that the pocket-book is three times as large as in the preceding edition, it is but a very little thicker, owing to our having eliminated the blank pages at the end. Much new matter has been inserted, and we particularly call attention to the sections relating to Civil Engineering; to Electrical Engineering; to Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation; and to those useful facts for Contractors, Carpenters, etc., which are contained in the section on Architecture. Respectfully, The International Correspondence Schools, SCRANTON, PA. JUNE 1, 1897. PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION. The first edition (2,000 copies) of the "Mechanics' Pocket Memoranda was issued last October, with the hope that it would prove useful to persons connected with Mechanical industries. Its claim to originality was that some of the principles given were stated more clearly and concisely than in more pretentious pocket-books. The popularity which it achieved was unexpected, and has induced us to issue a second edition in which a number of pages containing matter not strictly technical have been eliminated and the space devoted to practical Mechanical information. Considerable new matter relating to Architecture and Electricity has also been added. We trust the present edition will prove even more satisfactory than the preceding one, and that Engineers, Draftsmen, Machinists, Pattern-makers, Blacksmiths, Foundrymen, Electricians, Architects, Builders, Carpenters, Plumbers, Steam Fitters, etc., will find it convenient and useful.
