Single Rule of Three

T is called the RULE OF THREE, because three terms or numbers are given, to find a fourth and, from its great and extensive utility claims so decided a preference to all others, that it is often denominated the Golden Rule. This rule is usually considered of two kinds, viz. Direct and Inverse. The Rule of Three Direct is that in which more requires more, or less requires less; and enables us to find a fourth, proportional to three numbers given of these, two contain the supposition, and the third

a demand. The Rule of Three Inverse is when more requires less, or less requires more.

RULE. First state the question; that is, place the numbers in such order, that the first and third be of one kind, and the second the same as the number required then bring the first and third numbers. into one name, and the second into the lowest term mentioned. Multiply the second and third numbers together, and divide the product by the first; the quotient will be the answer to the question in the same denomination you left the second number in.
