In conformity to the act of the Congress of the United States entitled "An act for the encouragement of learning, by securing "the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and pro"prietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned; "and also to an act entitled an act supplementary to an act enti"tled an act for the encouragement of Jearning, by securing the copies of maps charts and books to the authors and proprietors "of such copies, during the times therein mentioned, and extend"ing the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and "etching historical and other prints."

OF the use and benefit of a guide calculated to assist the Farmer, Mechanic, TownOfficer, Tide-waiter, Merchant, Agent, Scrivener, &c. every practitioner will be convinced.

A work of this nature will be a matter of satisfaction, especially to those who are whol ly or in part unacquainted with arithmetic, the necessary forms or instruments in drafting, &c.

To facilitate the work, and render it familiar to those of the lowest class of education, (which class the author considers it his greatest duty to serve) he has prefixed two Keys of explanation, to the body of the work,
