Morris Memorial College, Nagpur, C.P.

This College was established in 1885 to commemorate the long connection, with the Central Provinces, of Sir John Morris, late Chief Commissioner, by associating his name with an Institution for the promotion of higher education. The College is maintained partly out of the interest of the money subscribed by the people of the Nagpur and Chhatisgarh Divisions of the Central Provinces, and partly out of grants by the Local Government and the Nagpur Municipal Committee. The subscribers to the College fund have, under the sanction of Government, registered themselves as "The Nagpur Morris College Association," under Act XXI of 1860, and the Institution is managed by a Council constituted as follows:

In June, 1886, a Law class was opened in connection with the College, with a view to preparation for the B.L. Degree of the Calcutta University, and with a view to assist candidates for Pleadership in the Central Provinces. The tuition fees of the first and second year classes have been raised from Rs. 3 to Rs. 4; that of the third and fourth year classes from Rs. 3 to Rs. 4-8; that of the Law classes from Rs. 8 to Rs. 5 a month.

In 1886 Raja Mahant Balaram Dass, a Feudatory Chief in the Chhatisgurh Division, founded a prize of Rs. 30 to be awarded to the best student in Sanskrit, in the Central Provinces, according to the result of the Entrance Examination of the Calcutta University, on condition of his joining the Morris College.

Hislop College [and Free] Church Enstitution, Nagpur.

The Institution embraces a Primary, Middle and a High School. The College Department, which was opened in 1884, teaches up to the M.A, Standard, and for the B.A. degree teaches both the 'A' and the 'B' courses. The fee in the F.A. classes is Rs. 4, and in the B.A. classes Rs. 4-8 per

mensem.

The buildings include a large central block of two stories, with two small wings; and, in the rear, a separate two-storied building, in which the lower classes are accommodated. The total cost amounted to nearly Rs. 65,000, of which Rs. 10,000 was contributed by the Rev. J. G. Cooper, a former Principal of the College, and the rest by the local Government, the Foreign Mission Committee of the Free Church of Scotland, and private friends. The College is named in honour of Rev. Stephen Hislop, the eminent geologist and founder of the Scottish Mission in Nagpur.

On the site of the old building on the Jumma Talao, there has been erected, at a cost of over Rs. 18,000, a Students' Hostel. It is open to those attending the College and High School, and provides accommodation for 60 students. Fees Rs 8-8 or Rs. 9.

There is also in the Civil Station a Christian Hostel under European supervision. The present building, which was erected in 1900, at a cost of about Rs. 5,000, has accommodation for thirty boarders, and is open to schoolboys, students and teachers.

A prize, of the value of Rs. 25, called "The Cooper Memorial Prize," is awarded annually to the student who passes the Entrance Examination with the highest marks in History and Geography.

Bethune College.

AFFILIATED, 1888.

This Institution, for the education of girls, was founded in 1849, by the Hon'ble I. E. Drinkwater Bethune, after whose name it is called. It was maintained by its founder from his private funds, until 1851, when he died. The Most Noble the Marquis of Dalhousie bore all its expenses from 1851 to It was then taken over, and has since been supported, by Government. The management is entrusted to a Committee appointed by the Government of Bengal. The Institution consists of two Departments. The College Department, started in 1879, is open to girls of all ages and nationalities, and provides for instruction up to the M.A. Standard of the Calcutta University. The School Department is open only to girls of Hindu extraction, between 6 and 18 years of age, and teaches up to the Entrance Standard. There is & Boarding Establishment attached to the Institution. The tuition fee for dayscholars is Rs 3 a month in the College Department, and Rs. 2 a month in the School Department. Boarders are charged a uniform fee of Rs. 10 a month. An admission fee of Rs. 2 has to be paid by every day-scholar, and of Rs. 10 by every boarder.

Victoria College, Cooch Behar.

This College was founded in commemoration of Her Majesty's Jubilee and was opened by H.H. The Maharaja of Cooch Behar on June 15th, 1888. It is maintained entirely at the expense of the State. Instruction is given up to the M.A. Standard. With the exception of the Law classes, for which a tuition fee of Rs. 3 per mensem is charged, all instruction is gratuitous.

A gold medal of the value of Rs. 100 is awarded annually to the student of the Victoria College who stands highest in the M.A. Examination. A scholarship of the value of Rs. 25 per month, tenable for one year only, is annually awarded under certain conditions, to the first graduate in order of merit from the College, who intends to read for the M.A. Degree. A scholarship of the value of Rs. 20 and another of Rs. 15 per month, tenable for two years, are awarded to the two first successful students from the College at the F.A. Examination.

Attached to the College, and under the control of the Principal are the Rajgan Boarding Institution (for the natives of the State), and the College Boarding Institution accommodating 70 students, at a monthly charge of Rs. 6 per head.

The Jenkins School is attached to the College and is under the control of the Principal.

The State Library is accessible to the advanced students, and forms an extensive collection of valuable works in different departments of Literature. The College Library contains books bearing on the University Course, as well as standard works in the different subjects of study.

There is a Gymnasium attached to the College, in which the students of the Jenkins School and the College are tanght exercises according to European and Indian methods, and exercises in Drill have also been introduced.

XXXV.

Victoria College, Naral.

AFFILIATED, 1886.

This College was originally founded as a H.E. School by the late Babu Ram Rattan Roy, the local Zemindar. It was raised to the status of a second grade College in 1886, and to that of a first grade College in 1890. There are, however, at present no B.A. classes in the Institution. The College building is a splendid pucca one, situated in the midst of a vast lawn, which affords good space for all sorts of manly exercises. The building of the Boarding House attached to the College is also a pucca one which, when the improvements contemplated to be effected in it are completed, will prove an attractive residence to students. All the Professors, Teachers, and Students of the College and the Collegiate School receive free Medical aid, provided by the descendants of the founder The Vernacular School attached to the College has been incorporated with the Collegiate School, and the whole institution, in all the departments, is under the control and supervision of the Principal.

The rate of fees in the College classes is Rs. 3 per month, while the rates in the School classes vary from Rs. 2 in the highest four classes to 4 annas in the lowest, so that no class of people need find it beyond their means to give their children the benefits of an English education at this Institution.

The Library of the College is well furnished with all the necessary or important works in English Literature, and the Laboratory is in a satisfactory condition. There are ample funds at the disposal of the authorities of the College for making any improvements or additions that may be required, and the descendants of the noble founder of the Institution are ever ready to do all that may be necessary for the efficiency of the College. The Professors, including the Principal, are not only always accessible to students but are ever ready to help the boys in all sorts of ways.
